Maple syrup is made by concentrating the sap from sugar maples primarily found in Quebec, Canada. It is known as a natural sweetener along with honey. A Canadian study has announced that maple syrup is more effective than alternative sweeteners in lowering blood sugar levels and reducing abdominal fat.

 

A research team at the Laval University School of Medicine's Heart and Lung Research Institute in Quebec, Canada, conducted a study on 42 adults aged 18 to 75 with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 23 to 40 kg/m². Over eight weeks, participants replaced refined sugar with two tablespoons of maple syrup for four weeks and with two tablespoons of sucralose syrup (artificial sweetener) for the remaining four weeks. As a result, blood sugar levels two hours after meals were 30 mg/dL lower when consuming maple syrup compared to artificial sweetener syrup, and the reduction in abdominal fat was 9% higher.


Dr. Andre Marret from the Laval University Medical School Heart and Lung Research Institute in Quebec, Canada, said, "This is because maple syrup contains over 100 natural compounds, including polyphenols," and "Polyphenols enhance the ability to burn fat, which helps with weight loss." He also added, "Polyphenols reduce insulin resistance, improve vascular wall function, and help regulate blood sugar levels."

 

Maple syrup is rich not only in polyphenols but also in the three essential minerals: potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which slow down the growth of cancer cells. It also contains high levels of zinc and manganese. Zinc helps maintain white blood cell counts and enhances immunity. Manganese plays a vital role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, blood sugar regulation, and brain and nerve function. However, maple syrup has a high sugar content, and excessive consumption can lead to various health problems. Especially for diabetics, overeating maple syrup can cause changes in blood sugar and insulin levels, potentially leading to complications, so caution is advised.
