Why do people get lung cancer even if they don't smoke?
If lung cancer develops despite having little or no smoking history, it is called 'non-smoker lung cancer patient.'
According to a booklet recently published by the Korean Society of Lung Cancer, non-smoking lung cancer patients are those who have smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
Among all lung cancer patients, about 30 to 40% are non-smokers, and this number is gradually increasing. In particular, 89% of women were non-smokers.
The reason for developing lung cancer regardless of smoking is because there are risk factors present throughout the living environment.
First, it is secondhand smoke. Even if I do not smoke, I am affected by the smoke exhaled by smokers and the smoke produced as the cigarette burns.
Second, environmental pollutants. These include asbestos, radon, and ultrafine dust. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency stated that for every 10 micrograms per square meter increase in ultrafine dust concentration, the incidence of lung cancer increases by 9%.
Third, it is the smoke produced during cooking. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies substances generated during high-temperature cooking or frying as Group 2A carcinogens, which have a high potential to cause cancer in humans. This smoke can be reduced through kitchen ventilation.
Fourth, genetic and family history. When there is a lung cancer patient among immediate family members, the risk of developing lung cancer doubles.
Experts advised that if a cough persists for more than three months, it is advisable to undergo lung cancer screening along with tests for other suspected conditions such as asthma.
Meanwhile, there are cases where people who do not drink a single glass of alcohol still develop pancreatic cancer. It is caused by coffee and carbonated beverages.
The pancreas is closely related to blood sugar levels. Frequently consuming sugary carbonated drinks and coffee with sugar increases insulin resistance. This can cause inflammation in the pancreas and lead to pancreatic cancer.
Even if you do not drink alcohol at all, excessive consumption of carbonated drinks and sugary coffee can lead to cancer. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also reported that high intake of carbonated drinks, sugary coffee mixes, and jam increases the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer ranks eighth among all cancer incidences in the country. In 2022 alone, there were 8,770 new cases of pancreatic cancer. The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 15.9%, the lowest among the top ten cancers.
Pancreatic cancer is more important to diagnose early than any other cancer. However, early diagnosis is also difficult because the exact mechanism of pancreatic cancer development is not well understood. To prevent pancreatic cancer, one should maintain a healthy diet and engage in appropriate exercise. A diet focused on protein and dietary fiber is recommended.
