Many people scratch themselves, saying they feel itchy in various parts of their body whenever the seasons change. As the weather becomes dry, the reduction of surface lipids and natural moisturizing factors in the skin causes itching. Is there a way to solve dry skin?

 

Dry skin particularly appears in certain areas. Mainly on the outer sides of the arms and the shins. Therefore, during seasonal changes, many people experience whitening and itching in these areas. It can also appear on the abdomen or thighs where there are fewer sebaceous glands. Occasionally, it occurs on the waist or ankles. This is because friction from belts or socks causes the skin to become even drier.


Dry skin is especially common in middle-aged and older adults due to aging, which reduces the skin's epidermal barrier recovery ability. In severe cases, the skin may crack like a stretch mark, and oozing or bleeding can occur. The causes of dry skin can be broadly divided into internal and external factors.

 

External factors include ▲cold and dry weather ▲UV exposure ▲excessive use of air conditioning and heating. Internal factors include ▲atopic dermatitis ▲chronic eczema ▲genetics ▲aging ▲thyroid disease. If internal factors are the cause, it is advisable to visit a hospital for treatment.

 

If it is not caused by a disease, symptoms can be alleviated simply by improving lifestyle habits.

 

It is best to avoid scratching as much as possible even if you feel itchy.

Adequately consume fluids and vitamins.

It is recommended to take a shower once a day for no more than 15 minutes.

 

Be careful when using water that is too hot at this time, as it can damage the skin's keratin layer and worsen itching.

Take a lukewarm shower and then apply moisturizer to prevent the skin from drying out. Avoid excessive air conditioning or heating, and try to maintain indoor humidity at around 40-60%.

 

If symptoms do not improve or worsen despite this, it is advisable to visit a dermatologist for an accurate assessment and treatment. For skin dryness without a specific cause, antihistamines and moisturizers are prescribed to relieve itching. Be cautious, as leaving severe skin dryness untreated for a long time can lead to secondary bacterial infections and worsen into dermatitis.
