In winter, when a cold wind blows, everyone’s hands and feet feel cold. However, if the coldness persists even after entering a warm indoor space, it may be worth suspecting Raynaud's phenomenon. Let's learn about Raynaud's phenomenon.
Cold extremities refer to a condition where hands and feet are excessively cold even at temperatures where one does not feel cold. In addition to the cold sensation in the hands and feet, coldness is also felt in various parts of the body such as the knees, lower abdomen, and waist. When the temperature drops, it can be accompanied by a tingling, numb sensation, making winter months require more careful management.
It is easy to think that cold extremities are mainly caused by constitutional factors, but they can occur due to various reasons. People of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly, experience cold extremities, but it is especially common among women over 40.
Professor Lee Chang-hoon of the Gynecology Department at Gangdong Kyunghee Oriental Medicine Hospital explained, "Women experience many hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, and have less muscle mass, making it difficult to maintain body temperature."
Cold extremities can also appear as symptoms accompanying underlying conditions. Typical examples include Raynaud's disease, where blood vessels dilate and turn red; Buerger's disease, common among smokers; rheumatic diseases; disc herniation; peripheral neuropathy; peripheral arterial disease; carpal tunnel syndrome; and hypothyroidism.
In this case, various tests such as thyroid function tests, inflammation-related marker tests, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, Doppler ultrasound, and nail capillaroscopy are used to identify the cause.
There is no special method to treat cold extremities syndrome itself. If there is an underlying condition, that condition should be treated, and it is important to improve lifestyle habits and keep the entire body warm.
Professor Lee Myung-a of the Department of Neurology at Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital said, "When doing laundry or washing dishes, it is advisable to use a washing machine to prevent hands and feet from touching cold water, and when handling food in the refrigerator, it is good to wear gloves."
Taking a half-body bath or foot bath at home can also help improve blood circulation. Strengthening your physical fitness through strength training or aerobic exercise is another method. Slow, deep breathing exercises can also help relieve stress.
Professor Kwon Gil-young of the Department of Family Medicine at Nowon Eulji Hospital advises, "Avoid smoking and beverages that constrict blood vessels such as coffee, cola, and alcohol. It is also recommended to consult a specialist about medications related to blood vessel constriction, such as birth control pills, migraine medications, heart medications, and blood pressure medications, and consider replacing them with other types of drugs."
Foods recommended for patients with cold extremities include garlic, chives, ginger, and salmon. Garlic promotes metabolism and keeps the body warm. Chives are well known as nutritional supplements and are very beneficial for patients with cold extremities who easily become fatigued and have no appetite.
On the other hand, foods to avoid include coffee, high-fat foods, and ice cream. Caffeine excessively constricts blood vessels, hindering blood circulation. High-fat foods impair blood circulation and can clog blood vessels. People with cold extremities should avoid cold foods like ice cream that lower body temperature.
