The leftover calories are stored as fat in the body, leading to weight gain and increasing the risk of various diseases such as colon cancer. During this process, blood sugar levels spike, raising alarms for diabetes prevention and control, and abdominal fat appears. Eating a lot without physical activity makes it more difficult for the body to secrete insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Repeating these habits can worsen diabetes that requires lifelong management and lead to obesity.

Between 30 minutes to 1 hour after a meal, digestion begins and blood sugar starts to rise. Therefore, engaging in physical activity during this time is most effective for lowering blood sugar. Especially if you ate carbohydrate-rich foods like noodles for lunch, blood sugar levels can spike significantly. Even if you're in the office, it's good to have your own blood sugar control habits, such as walking in the hallway or climbing stairs.

However, if you already have diabetes, you should avoid exercising in a fasting state or before meals. If you are using insulin, consider reducing the amount of insulin to prevent hypoglycemia caused by exercise. It is recommended not to exercise within 60 to 90 minutes after insulin injection. Using insulin to control blood sugar levels can make daily life difficult. If you are in the pre-diabetic stage, it is good to stay active diligently after meals.

 

How to prevent diabetes in the pre-diabetic stage?

 

According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, weight loss through diet and exercise can prevent the progression from prediabetes to diabetes. Therefore, people at high risk of diabetes should consistently lower their blood sugar levels through dietary control and physical activity. The reason late-night snacking is harmful is not only because it is high in calories but also because it occurs close to bedtime, leaving no time for the body to move. The reason for eating dinner early is also because there is enough time to burn calories.

 

Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits... Dietary fiber that lowers blood sugar is key

 

The reason why vegetables and fruits are good is because they contain a lot of dietary fiber, which has the effect of lowering blood sugar levels. According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, it also introduces research results recommending that about 30% of the total meal intake (calorie intake) should come from dietary fiber. It suggests consuming at least 15 grams of dietary fiber per 1,000 kcal of calories. Whole grains and seaweed also contain a lot of dietary fiber, which slows the rise in blood sugar and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol.
