Memory and personality changed, I thought it was dementia... Is it because of 'liver disease'?
If the thyroid hormones responsible for metabolism are deficient, all functions in the body decline. Brain activity is also affected. In hypothyroidism, where thyroid hormones are not produced properly, symptoms similar to dementia such as decreased memory and concentration, language impairment, and lethargy appear. Many studies also indicate that people treated for hypothyroidism have a higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who are not.
Dementia symptoms caused by hypothyroidism can be treated if detected before they develop into actual dementia. By administering thyroid hormone medication to normalize brain activity, the dementia symptoms can disappear.
If syphilis is not treated early, it can develop into neurosyphilis, during which the syphilis bacteria can enter the brain and cause inflammation. Even when cognitive function declines due to syphilis bacteria, there are cases where it is mistaken for dementia and only dementia treatment is administered, not addressing the syphilis. If the syphilis that caused the problem is not treated, the bacteria will continue to damage the brain, potentially leading to dementia.
Cirrhosis refers to a state where liver function is impaired due to inflammation in the liver. When the liver cannot perform its normal functions, it fails to adequately break down toxins in the body, leading to the production of highly toxic ammonia. As ammonia circulates in the bloodstream and enters the brain, it causes a decline in cognitive function and slows down behavior. While treatments that remove ammonia can alleviate symptoms, cirrhosis is not a disease that can be completely cured, and it can recur at any time.
