Among the foods we commonly enjoy, there are some hidden foods that can be harmful to the body without us realizing it. Among them, a few foods can act as factors that increase the risk of cancer, so caution is necessary. Based on information from the American health media Health Natural, we will look into ten foods to avoid for health.

 

1. Processed meats = Bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and other processed meats contain chemical components called nitrates and nitrites. These substances can convert into carcinogens in the body, increasing the risk of colon cancer. It is recommended to choose fresh chicken or fish instead of processed meats, and it is safer to cook by boiling or steaming rather than grilling directly over an open flame.

 

2. Red meat = Red meats such as beef and pork are also associated with colon cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic cancer. In particular, the risk of harmful substances produced when grilling at high temperatures increases, so it is safe to consume them in moderation, no more than twice a week. If you are considering alternative proteins, it is also good to use chicken, tofu, or legumes. Boiling or steaming methods are better choices than grilling, as they can reduce the formation of carcinogenic substances.


3. Microwave popcorn = popcorn that can be easily enjoyed using a microwave. However, chemicals contained in microwave popcorn packaging may increase the risk of cancer. In particular, artificial butter flavoring inside the pack can be harmful to the human body.

 

4. Pickled foods = Pickled foods like pickles have a strong salty taste that stimulates appetite, but excessive salt intake can increase the risk of stomach cancer. The high incidence of stomach cancer in Asian countries that consume a lot of pickled foods can be linked to this. It is better to consume a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits rather than pickled foods. Using herbs or spices instead of salt to flavor foods is also a way to maintain health.

 

5. Trans fat-containing oils = Trans fats found in margarine or some processed foods can increase inflammation in the body and raise the risk of various diseases, including cancer. When choosing foods, check the ingredient list to select products without trans fats, and use healthy oils such as olive oil or avocado oil during cooking.

 

6. Snacks containing flour and sugar = Bread made from white flour or cookies high in sugar can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels and lead to obesity. Obesity is one of the main causes that increase the risk of various cancers. It is advisable to choose and consume healthy grains such as whole wheat bread or brown rice, and for snacks, opt for whole grain-made snacks rather than processed foods to maintain health.

 

7. Artificial sweeteners= There are research findings suggesting a link between artificial sweeteners, often used in diet drinks or low-calorie products, and cancer development. In particular, artificial sweeteners like aspartame or saccharin may be harmful to the body over the long term, so it is advisable to replace them with natural sweeteners such as stevia or honey whenever possible.

 

8. Grilled meat = Chemical compounds produced during the process of grilling meat at high temperatures can cause cancer. In particular, the charred, blackened parts of the meat contain concentrated harmful substances, so it is better to marinate the meat beforehand or use boiling or steaming methods instead of grilling to reduce the formation of carcinogens.


9. Non-organic produce = Consuming non-organic fruits and vegetables that contain pesticide residues can also increase the risk of cancer. This is because pesticides can act as carcinogens when accumulated in the body. It is important to choose organic products whenever possible and to thoroughly wash non-organic fruits and vegetables before consumption. Especially for fruits eaten with the skin, thorough cleaning is essential.

 

10. Canned foods = Canned foods may contain a chemical called BPA, which is used as an internal coating in cans. BPA is known to disrupt the endocrine system and increase the risk of cancer. When purchasing canned products, choose those labeled BPA-free, or preferably, use fresh ingredients instead of canned foods for greater safety.
