Important precautions when whitening teeth

Most teeth whitening products are over-the-counter items made with hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of 3% or less.

Teeth whitening products sold as over-the-counter items come in various forms such as gel, adhesive, and toothpaste, and can show whitening effects after 1 to 2 weeks of use.

Teeth whitening agents generate oxygen that contacts the outermost enamel of the teeth, producing a bleaching effect. This oxygen enters the pores of the tooth surface and removes the staining substances inside the teeth.

However, the problem with over-the-counter teeth whitening products is that it is difficult to adjust the amount of whitening agent and hydrogen peroxide content according to individual tooth conditions, which can lead to side effects.

It is not recommended to use teeth whitening products if you have mouth sores, cavities, or periodontal disease. Using whitening agents on weakened teeth can stimulate deep within the teeth, potentially causing side effects such as periodontitis or tooth sensitivity.

If you continue to use whitening products despite experiencing tooth sensitivity, it can stimulate the inner nerve tissue of the tooth, known as the pulp. This can lead to issues such as tooth hypersensitivity, nerve damage, and gum disease, so caution is necessary.
