A study has found that the higher the intake of ultra-processed foods, the faster individuals age compared to their peers.
Highly processed foods contain food additives and have undergone multiple processing and modification steps.
▲Frozen foods ▲Processed meats ▲Fast food ▲Instantly prepared foods ▲Processed beverages are representative.
According to the paper titled "Estimation of Ultra-Processed Food Intake in Korean Adults" published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Community Nutrition, Korean adults consume 29.3% of their caloric intake from ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods destroy nutrients such as fiber and minerals during processing, which is harmful to health.
A research team from Monash University in Australia conducted a study to investigate how ultra-processed food consumption affects aging. They analyzed data from 16,055 American adults aged 20 to 79 years old from 2003 to 2010.
The research team divided the participants into five groups based on the proportion of ultra-processed foods in their total daily energy intake. The group with the least consumption of ultra-processed foods, the first quintile, ranged from 0 to 39.1%, with an average consumption rate of 30.0%. The group with the highest consumption, the fifth quintile, ranged from 67.7% to 100%, with an average consumption rate of 76.7%.
The research team used 'PhenoAge' as an indicator to estimate the biological age of participants. PhenoAge is a concept that measures biological age using blood-based biomarkers, focusing on liver and kidney function.
Analysis showed that people in the fifth quintile group appear approximately 0.86 years older than their actual age compared to those in the first quintile group. Based on this, it was calculated that for every 10% of energy intake from ultra-processed foods, the biological age is about 2.4 months ahead of the actual age.
Ultra-processed foods have been shown to increase the risk of chronic diseases and mortality. According to additional analysis by the research team, assuming a daily intake of 2000 kcal, adding 200 kcal from ultra-processed foods results in a 2% increase in the risk of death and a 0.5% increase in the risk of developing chronic diseases over the next two years.
The research team hypothesized that ultra-processed foods lead to insufficient intake of antioxidants such as flavonoids found in fruits and vegetables, resulting in these outcomes.
This research result was recently published in the international journal 'Age&Aging'.
