A study found that people who consume more ultra-processed foods age faster than their peers.
Ultra-processed foods are foods that contain food additives and have gone through multiple processing and transformation processes.
▲Frozen foods ▲Processed meats ▲Fast foods ▲Instant foods ▲Processed beverages are representative examples.
According to a paper titled "Estimating Ultra-Processed Food Intake in Korean Adults" published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Community Nutrition, Korean adults consume 29.3% of their calories from ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods are detrimental to health, as nutrients like fiber and minerals are destroyed during the processing process.
A research team from Monash University in Australia conducted a study to determine how ultra-processed food consumption affects aging. They analyzed data from 16,055 American adults aged 20 to 79 from 2003 to 2010.
The research team divided the participants into five tiers based on the percentage of their total daily energy intake from ultra-processed foods. The first quintile, with the lowest consumption of ultra-processed foods, ranged from 0% to 39.1%, with an average ultra-processed food consumption rate of 30.0%. The fifth quintile, with the highest consumption, ranged from 67.7% to 100%, with an average ultra-processed food consumption rate of 76.7%.
The research team used "PhenoAge" as an indicator to estimate the participants' biological age. PhenoAge is a concept that uses blood-based biomarkers to measure biological age based on liver and kidney function.
The analysis found that people in the 5th quintile appeared approximately 0.86 years older than their actual age compared to those in the 1st quintile. Based on this, calculations showed that for every 10% of energy intake from ultra-processed foods, their biological age increased by approximately 2.4 months.
Ultra-processed foods have been shown to increase the risk of chronic disease and even mortality. Further analysis by the research team revealed that, assuming a daily intake of 2,000 kcal, consuming an additional 200 kcal from ultra-processed foods increased the risk of death by 2% and the risk of developing chronic disease by 0.5% over the next two years.
The research team estimated that these results were caused by ultra-processed foods leading to insufficient intake of antioxidants such as flavonoids found in fruits and vegetables.
The results of this study were recently published in the international academic journal 'Age&Aging'.

▲Frozen foods ▲Processed meats ▲Fast food
▲Instant food ▲Processed beverages
Among these, the one I use most often is
I think it's frozen food.
If you consume these things frequently, your skin will age.
Should I come a little sooner?
