The autoimmune skin disease psoriasis has been added to the list of diseases that can be caused by consuming large amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPF). This was reported by the medical webzine "Health Day" based on a research letter from French researchers published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Dermatology on the 27th (local time).

"Our study found a link between ultra-processed food intake and psoriasis activity," said a research team led by Dr. Emily Svidian, a dermatologist at the Henri-Mondor Hospital in France. They added that psoriasis could be added to previous research linking excessive ultra-processed food consumption to a range of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The researchers examined the health records of over 18,500 people registered in a major French health database. Their analysis of data collected between late 2021 and mid-2022 revealed that 1,825 people had psoriasis, and 802 were considered to have "active" psoriasis.

Among the survey questions was one about the daily intake (in grams) of ultra-processed foods. After adjusting for other psoriasis risk factors, the researchers found that compared to people who never had psoriasis, those with active psoriasis were 36% more likely to be in the top third of their daily intake of ultra-processed foods.

The study couldn't prove causation, only an association. However, the results held even after accounting for age, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI, an estimate of body fat based on height and weight), and other medical conditions. This suggests that the link between ultra-processed foods and psoriasis may go beyond the link between food and obesity, the researchers explained.

Ultra-processed foods are mostly made from substances derived from natural foods, such as saturated fat, starch, and added sugars. They also contain food additives like colorings, emulsifiers, flavorings, and preservatives to extend shelf life, facilitate cooking, and stimulate the appetite. These include packaged bakery products, sugar-sweetened cereals, ready-to-eat or reheated instant foods like hamburgers, ramen, and delivery pizza, processed meats like sausages and bacon, and various snacks.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes red, itchy patches covered with silvery-white scales. It can appear anywhere on the body, from head to toe, most commonly beginning on the elbows and knees before spreading to the buttocks, scalp, arms, legs, hands, and feet. Some patients may also develop psoriatic arthritis, characterized by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. While the cause of psoriasis is unknown, it is believed to be caused by an immune system disorder.

===============

This is my first time hearing about psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis on the skin doesn't seem to be something that can be easily seen.

It's so cold, and there's no warm water either

You also need to moisturize well,

You should try to avoid eating ultra-processed foods.
