From itchy fingers to blisters… You should suspect this skin disease.
From itchy fingers to blisters… You should suspect this skin disease.
If you experience itching on the sides of your fingers or palms, followed by clusters of small blisters, you should suspect "herpes zoster." Herpes zoster is a non-inflammatory skin condition that affects the hands and feet. It most commonly affects people under 40. Despite being relatively common, the cause is often unknown because it often resolves on its own. What causes herpes zoster, and is there a way to prevent it?
The exact cause of herpes zoster is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to psychological stress, fatigue, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Once an outbreak occurs, it can recur and worsen depending on the season or stress. Irritating substances such as detergents, rubber gloves, chemicals, oil, nickel, chromium, and cobalt can also be triggers. There are also reports that taking oral contraceptives, aspirin, and smoking increase the risk of herpes zoster.
Herpes zoster is characterized by itching, which appears before or immediately after the blisters appear. The itching is aggravated by contact with water or soap. Afterward, clusters of small, transparent, hard-to-burst blisters, measuring 1-2 mm, appear on the palms or sides of the fingers. A burning or stinging sensation may also be felt.
Herpes zoster is treated by applying topical steroid ointment to the affected area. While long-term, repeated use of steroid ointment can cause side effects, in mild cases, symptoms can significantly improve with just a short treatment. Depending on the severity, wet compresses and phototherapy may also be used. In severe cases, oral or injected steroids may be used, but these can also cause side effects, so thorough consultation with a doctor is recommended.
Most herpes zoster symptoms resolve spontaneously after two to three weeks, accompanied by shedding of the epidermis. However, recurrences are very common. The goal of treating herpes zoster is not a complete cure, but rather to manage the skin to minimize side effects based on the symptoms. To prevent herpes zoster, improving lifestyle habits is crucial. Avoiding stress and getting plenty of rest are key priorities. When washing your hands, avoid excessive washing and use a mild soap. Dry your hands thoroughly afterward. Avoid contact with irritants like detergents, metals, or chemicals, as these can worsen symptoms.
Meanwhile, herpes zoster can be easily confused with other autoimmune blistering diseases, contact dermatitis, and athlete's foot. Instead of self-diagnosing and choosing a treatment, you should consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis.
