(Dermatitis) "Don't bathe often"... It's dry so I keep scratching

"Don't bathe too often"... How can I avoid dryness, scratching, and dermatitis?

Story by reporter Im Jong-eon (eoni@kormedi.com)

The transitional period has begun, with increasing daily temperature ranges and dry air. During this time, rapid temperature and humidity changes can significantly impact skin health. In particular, they can dehydrate the skin, leading to itching.

Seasonal itching can be triggered by common stimuli in everyday life, such as light contact or stress. In severe cases, it can cause significant discomfort, even disrupting sleep. Furthermore, if left untreated, it can develop into dermatitis or secondary infections, so caution is advised.

Kim Dae-hyun, a professor of dermatology at Korea University Anam Hospital, said, "Advanced skin itching not only becomes more difficult to treat, but can also develop into dermatitis, which takes a long time to recover from," adding, "More effective treatment is needed in the early stages."

Itchy skin is most often caused by dehydration due to rapidly decreasing humidity. To alleviate symptoms, using a moisturizer is recommended to maintain skin moisture and facilitate its natural function.

If it progresses to dermatitis, it can be treated with appropriate prescriptions such as oral antihistamines and topical steroids under the care of a specialist.

Preventative measures in daily life include maintaining appropriate indoor humidity, avoiding long, hot baths, and avoiding strenuous activities. After showering, it's best to apply a generous amount of moisturizer immediately, and avoid tight-fitting clothing or metal accessories when going outside. Reducing stress can also have a positive impact on skin health.

Above all, it's important not to scratch too hard when you feel itchy. If itching is severe, apply an ice pack to the itchy area or gently rub it with your palm.

Professor Kim advised, "It is better to choose a regular product rather than a moisturizer that contains colors or fragrances that can irritate the skin." He also said, "If applying moisturizer frequently does not solve the problem and it gets worse, it is advisable to see a dermatologist to find the most suitable treatment for you."

The following is suggested by the National Health Insurance Corporation. 8 Tips to Prevent Dry Skin am.

▲Drink more than 8 cups of water a day and avoid caffeinated beverages.

▲Set the indoor temperature to 18-20 degrees.

▲Indoors, use a humidifier to maintain the appropriate humidity level.

▲Shower lightly with lukewarm water and do not rub the dirt.

▲Keep bathing as short as possible and infrequent.

▲Immediately after bathing, apply moisturizing cream to the area where itching occurs.

▲Use neutral or slightly acidic soap for bathing products.
