A study found that persistent loneliness significantly increases the risk of dementia.

Dr. Martina Lucchetti's team at the University of Florida School of Medicine in the United States conducted a meta-analysis of various aging studies and published research data on the link between loneliness and dementia and cognitive impairment. The analysis included data from approximately 600,000 people worldwide.

The analysis revealed that loneliness increases the risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and cognitive impairment. A closer look revealed that loneliness increased the risk of dementia by 31% and cognitive impairment by 15%. This association persisted even after adjusting for other risk factors for dementia.

The negative impact of loneliness on physical and mental health is well known. The researchers stated, "This is a very important finding, demonstrating that loneliness is a very significant risk factor for developing dementia in the future. We have confirmed that loneliness is crucial for future health in various ways, including longevity."

Dr. Lucetti noted one promising aspect of this study: loneliness is a modifiable risk factor. "There are many different types and causes of loneliness that can impact cognitive symptoms across the dementia continuum," he said. "Addressing loneliness and increasing connectedness could have a positive impact on cognitive health in later life."
