When you want to maintain brain health, which is better: coffee or tea?

Coffee and tea are popular caffeinated beverages, each with its own distinct flavor and characteristics, leading to differing tastes. Which of the two is better for brain health? A recent study found that drinking more than four cups of coffee increases the risk of stroke, but drinking the same amount of tea lowers the risk of stroke. come.

A joint research team from the University of Galway in Ireland and McMaster University in Canada analyzed the correlation between tea and coffee consumption and stroke in 26,950 adults from 32 countries. Participants filled out questionnaires about stroke risk factors such as medical history (including high blood pressure), diet, physical activity, and smoking. The research team also asked the participants how many cups of tea or coffee they drank per day. Of the participants, 45% drank only tea, 20% drank both coffee and tea, 20% drank neither beverage, and 15% drank only coffee.

The analysis found that drinking four or more cups of coffee per day increased the risk of total stroke by 37% and stroke caused by blood clots by 32% compared to those who did not drink coffee. Drinking three or fewer cups of coffee per day was not associated with a higher stroke risk.

Drinking four or more cups of tea a day was associated with a roughly 19% lower stroke risk compared to not drinking tea, and the effect varied depending on the type of tea. Drinking four cups of black tea, such as English Breakfast or Earl Grey, a day lowered the risk of stroke by 29%, while drinking green tea reduced the risk by 27%.

The research team attributed these results to differences in caffeine content between the two beverages. Coffee has a higher caffeine content than tea, with a single paper cup containing 80-100 mg and 50 mg, respectively. Caffeine stimulates the release of adrenaline, which increases heart rate and blood pressure. Persistently elevated heart rate and blood pressure can damage cerebral blood vessels, increasing the risk of blood clots and stroke, the team found.

However, to enjoy the stroke prevention benefits of tea, you must avoid adding milk. In the study above, adding milk to tea negated the stroke risk reduction effect. The research team analyzed that milk blocks the antioxidant properties of tea, nullifying its stroke prevention effects.
