Which is better for maintaining brain health: coffee or tea?

Coffee and tea are popular caffeinated beverages, each with distinct flavors and characteristics that appeal to different preferences. Which drink is better for brain health? Recently, a study found that consuming more than four cups of coffee increases the risk of stroke, whereas drinking the same amount of tea decreases the risk of stroke.

A joint research team from Galway University in Ireland and McMaster University in Canada analyzed the correlation between tea or coffee consumption and stroke in 26,950 adults from 32 countries. Participants completed questionnaires on stroke risk factors such as medical history (e.g., hypertension), diet, physical activity, and smoking. The research team investigated how many cups of tea or coffee participants drank daily. Among the participants, 45% drank only tea, 20% drank both coffee and tea, 20% did not drink any beverages, and 15% drank only coffee.

The analysis showed that drinking four or more cups of coffee a day increased the overall risk of stroke by 37% and the risk of stroke caused by blood clots by 32% compared to not drinking coffee. Drinking three or fewer cups of coffee a day was not associated with stroke risk.

Drinking four or more cups of tea a day reduces the risk of stroke by approximately 19% compared to not drinking tea, and the risk reduction effect varies depending on the type of tea. Consuming four cups of black tea such as English Breakfast or Earl Grey per day lowered the risk of stroke by 29%, while drinking green tea reduced the risk by 27%.

The research team analyzed that the difference in caffeine content between the two beverages resulted in these outcomes. Coffee contains more caffeine than tea, with a standard paper cup containing approximately 80-100mg and 50mg of caffeine, respectively. Caffeine promotes the secretion of adrenaline, which increases heart rate and blood pressure. Continuous elevation of heart rate and blood pressure can damage cerebral blood vessels, thereby increasing the risk of blood clots and stroke.

However, to enjoy the stroke prevention benefits when drinking tea, milk should not be added. The study found that adding milk to tea eliminated the stroke risk reduction effect. The research team analyzed that milk blocks the antioxidant properties of tea, nullifying its stroke prevention benefits.
