좀 어릴 때 이렇게 혼자 여행도 다녀보고 했으면 좋았을텐데~~ 나이드니까 뭐든지 겁나서 혼자 뭐 시도를 못하겠어요.
- Self-awareness increases
Many people experience a lot but still do not truly know themselves. In such cases, traveling alone can be helpful. If done properly, that is.
Traveling alone can be an opportunity to discover oneself by stepping out of familiar and comfortable environments and experiencing various new situations. It allows you to learn how you respond when faced with unfamiliar circumstances and to realize what you are capable of doing. Since there is no one to converse with, you can spend long periods alone, reflecting on and feeling what has happened to you.
However, if you keep holding onto your phone, the story changes. That's why the premise is that you need to do it properly. For a solo trip to be truly healing, no matter how difficult or boring it is, you must try to deeply understand your own emotions, thoughts, and values. Only then can you meet and love a new version of yourself.
2. Develop independence and the ability to make decisions on your own
When traveling alone, there is no one to rely on, so all decisions must be made by oneself. Choosing which places to visit, what to eat—every decision is one's own responsibility. At first, it can be frightening, uncertain, and anxiety-inducing. However, over time, making decisions independently will become more comfortable, and your intuition will be strengthened. The more experiences like this you have, the sharper your instincts will become, and you will gain confidence in making decisions.
3. Adaptability and resilience improve
Unexpected events frequently occur during travel. Flights may be delayed, luggage may be lost, or the booked hotel may not meet expectations. In situations where expectations are repeatedly unmet, one must adapt to survive. This means resilience is necessary.
The reason for going on a trip is for healing, and resilience plays a significant role in this. Having resilience does not mean that one does not experience stress or emotional pain at all, but rather that one has the ability to overcome them.
4. Learn how to trust yourself
When we experience trauma, we often forget who we are. We see our bodies and minds through distorted perspectives and find it difficult to trust ourselves. However, self-trust is a very important part of healing the mind. Once you successfully overcome the obstacles mentioned earlier and learn to make decisions on your own, you will soon be able to trust yourself. Traveling alone will help you realize how good it feels to accomplish something without the help of others and how healing that experience can be.
5. It allows you to see from a new perspective and inspires you.
The most precious gift that traveling alone offers is gaining a new perspective. Trauma or mental suffering distort the mind, often preventing one from considering alternative ways to approach problems, especially when trapped in harmful thought patterns. While one may know that there are other ways, they might not know what those ways are.
Just as airing out clothes stored in a closet is necessary to eliminate musty odors, our minds also need ventilation. Sometimes, going to a new place, seeing new things, and meeting new people can be ways to gain a different perspective. Let go of the viewpoints you always hold and take the time to encounter and savor things you've never experienced before. Exploring the world alone can lead to new inspirations different from your existing way of thinking.
6. Forming new relationships
Not only people but also experiencing nature, places, and cultural aspects can be healing. When people are hurt, they instinctively withdraw and tend to cut off relationships with their surroundings. This is a natural protective response, but the problem is that isolation can intensify suffering. Traveling alone allows for forming new relationships, helping to counteract this instinct.
When wandering in unfamiliar places, you will inevitably encounter something that connects you. The sense of peace felt upon reaching the mountain summit, the lush forest filled with centuries-old trees, and the scenery of a cool river all come together to create a feeling of being more connected to the world.
7. You become better at understanding your own thoughts and feelings.
Traveling alone allows you to pay more attention to yourself and your surroundings. In psychology, mindfulness is a core concept of healing. Through mindfulness, by observing your thoughts, you can perceive your thoughts or emotions as a kind of storm or event within your mind, which can prevent those emotions from dominating you any longer. Healing is about loosening the grip of these old negative patterns that control you and being able to see the way forward.
When you carefully observe your thoughts in an unfamiliar environment, all your senses and experiences become heightened, and you become better at recognizing the flow of your emotions. You begin to see your thoughts and feelings as temporary events that can be observed. Realizing this allows you to let go of helplessness and enables you to move forward.
