Even if you turn off all the lights before going to bed, if light comes in from outside the window, it is a good idea to wear an 'eye mask'.

 

A recent study found that exposure to outdoor light pollution may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. A research team at Rush University compared and analyzed light pollution maps from 48 states with medical data from 2012 to 2018. They found that people under 65 living in areas with high light pollution were more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease at a younger age. They also found an increased risk of alcoholism, kidney disease, depression, heart failure, and obesity.

 

Light is a 'switch' for our brain activity. The suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus of the brain sends a signal to the body to wake up when light enters the retina. Even when you sleep with your eyes closed, the quality of your sleep is bound to be compromised if external light enters. When you don't get enough sleep, many physiological functions, such as memory storage, immunity, and metabolic activity, decline.


The easiest solution is a 'blindfold'. 

All you have to do is block out the incoming light. There are even research results confirming the effectiveness of eye masks. A research team at Cardiff University in the UK had 89 people sleep with eye masks on for five days.

 

Afterwards, they measured their word association ability, concentration, and reaction speed. For the next five days, they slept without the eye mask and then performed the same tests. The results showed that all participants were smarter when wearing the eye mask.

 

In all tests, scores were higher when the blindfold was removed than when the blindfold was removed. The research team said, "When wearing a sleep mask, the time spent in slow-wave sleep, known as deep sleep, increased, which seemed to improve memory and learning efficiency."

 

Drawing blackout curtains can also help. Among the night lights that cause light pollution, blue light is the most harmful to health, so it is best to avoid using smartphones, tablets, etc. for an hour before going to bed.
