If the light from outside the window enters even after turning off all the lights before bed, it would be good to wear an eye mask.

 

Recent research has shown that exposure to outdoor light pollution may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. A research team from Rush University in the United States compared and analyzed light pollution maps of 48 states with medical data from 2012 to 2018. It was found that in areas with high light pollution, there were more young Alzheimer's patients under the age of 65. Additionally, it increased the risks of alcohol addiction, kidney disease, depression, heart failure, and obesity.

 

Light is the 'switch' for our brain activity. The suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus of the brain sends signals to alert our body when light enters the retina. Even when sleeping with eyes closed, external light can inevitably reduce sleep quality. If you cannot sleep, many physiological functions such as memory storage, immunity, and metabolic activities decline.


The easiest solution is an eye mask. 

You just need to block out the incoming light. There is also research confirming the effectiveness of eye masks. A research team from Cardiff University in the UK had 89 people wear sleep masks for five days to sleep.

 

Subsequently, word association ability, concentration, and reaction speed were measured. Over the next five days, participants slept without sleep masks and then underwent the same test. As a result, all participants became smarter when wearing the sleep mask.

 

The scores were higher when sleeping without an eye mask compared to when wearing one during all tests. The research team stated, "Wearing an eye mask appears to increase the duration of slow-wave sleep, which is associated with deep sleep, leading to improved memory and enhanced learning ability."

 

Using blackout curtains can also be helpful. Additionally, among the nighttime lighting that causes light pollution, blue light has the most detrimental effect on health, so it is advisable not to use smartphones, tablets, and similar devices at least one hour before bedtime.
