A blocked nose all day... Proper treatment for 'sinusitis'

Story of Reporter Kim Dong-wook

As the number of patients with sinusitis (sinus infection) increases, appropriate treatment methods are gaining attention. Acute sinusitis has symptoms similar to a cold, but differences in treatment methods require caution. For sinusitis treatment, the standard approach is typically medication based on antibiotics, and auxiliary drugs such as antihistamines can also be helpful.

According to the big data from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service on the 20th, the number of patients with acute sinusitis last year was 3,994,297. This represents a 55.8% increase compared to the previous year (2,564,506). Compared to two years ago in 2021 (1,955,947), the number of patients has more than doubled.

Sinusitis is an inflammatory disease that occurs in the sinuses, the hollow spaces within the bones around the nose. Major causes include yellow dust and pollen. Recently, the medical community reports an increase in the number of patients due to factors such as air pollution and decreased immunity caused by stress.

Sinusitis is broadly classified into acute and chronic types. Symptoms lasting within 4 weeks are considered acute, while symptoms persisting for 12 weeks (3 months) or more are considered chronic. Acute sinusitis presents with symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, fatigue, headache, low-grade fever, and facial pain. Chronic sinusitis mainly manifests as nasal congestion, persistent yellow nasal discharge, and post-nasal drip.

Sinusitis and the common cold have similar symptoms, but there are clear differences in their treatment methods.

To treat sinusitis caused primarily by bacteria, antibiotics must be administered.

In cases of the common cold caused primarily by a virus, antibiotics are generally not necessary except in very rare cases where a bacterial infection is suspected. If symptoms persist despite taking medications commonly used to treat the cold, it is a reason to suspect sinusitis.

The basic treatment for sinusitis is medication therapy. Both acute and chronic sinusitis require the use of antibiotics. In addition to antibiotics, it is also beneficial to use various adjunct medications. Typical adjunct medications include antihistamines like Komekina capsules, which help improve nasal congestion and runny nose, mucolytics such as Eldos, and topical steroids.

Nasal irrigation with saline solution and humidity control through a humidifier can help by reducing mucus viscosity, improving drainage and ciliary movement, and alleviating mucosal bleeding. However, if symptoms do not improve or worsen, professional assistance should be sought.

=============

Using a nasal rinse is very helpful.

This is the same even if it's empty..

My younger sibling has a severe sinus infection.

I had surgery, but...

Because I have been sleeping for 10 years.

It starts again gradually.

It's really a chronic issue.
