As we get older, there are some health issues that become more of a concern.

Dementia is a condition that occurs when the brain's cognitive function declines. It's a disease of high concern, affecting not only the individual but also those around them. In severe cases, it can easily disrupt daily life. Chuseok is a holiday season where the whole family gathers. If you're seeing your parents for the first time in a while, pay close attention.

Recently, dementia, such as alcoholic dementia and early-onset dementia, has become a serious concern even for young people. Many people cite memory loss as a key symptom of dementia. However, it's difficult to determine whether this memory loss is truly a sign of early dementia or simply a poor memory. How can we distinguish between memory impairment caused by dementia and forgetfulness?

A key distinction between the two is that dementia, unlike amnesia, causes impairments in various mental functions, including language, spatial perception, and judgment, in addition to memory loss. Therefore, in the case of typical amnesia, other aspects of the patient's life are intact, so it doesn't have a long-term impact on daily life. In contrast, dementia can significantly impact daily life, leading to problems like language impairment and loss.

Also, in the case of forgetfulness, you can remember what you want to remember by looking at a hint, but in the case of dementia, you often cannot remember even if you look at a hint.

Changes in personality and emotions can also be symptoms of dementia. For example, a once enthusiastic person may become sloppy with tasks, or a once cheerful person may become depressed. These emotional changes can also lead to sleep disturbances or even depression.

With treatment, some dementias can be restored to their previous state. Even in cases where recovery is not possible, the rate of brain function decline can be slowed. Therefore, early diagnosis is crucial for dementia. To diagnose dementia, cognitive function is assessed through neuropsychological testing. If dementia is suspected, further testing is performed. Once diagnosed, blood tests and MRIs are performed to identify the underlying cause.

To prevent dementia, it's best to engage in activities that require a lot of mental effort. Hobbies are beneficial, such as simple games that require mental effort or reading and writing. Seo Eun-ju, a radiologist at the Jeonbuk branch of the Korea Health Management Association's Health Promotion Center, advises, "Avoiding excessive drinking and smoking is recommended, and maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise are also helpful. Sleep deprivation can also impair memory, so getting enough sleep is crucial."

=============

Forgetfulness - does not have a long-term impact on daily life because other aspects of the condition are normal except for memory.

Dementia - can have a significant impact on daily life, such as causing speech impediments or loss of direction.

I think forgetting things is a habit

You can just pass by.

If common events are vague: forgetfulness

If you completely forget even that incident: dementia
