Symptoms and Treatment of Frozen Shoulder
Symptoms of frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder (commonly referred to as '50s shoulder') is a condition characterized by shoulder pain without any specific trauma, leading to impaired shoulder movement due to the pain.
Symptoms
Severe pain and nighttime pain
These symptoms are also observed in other shoulder conditions and are not unique to frozen shoulder.
② Active and passive joint movement restrictions
Initially, it is difficult to rotate the shoulders inward. Afterwards, it becomes hard to lift the arms forward or rotate them outward. For example, actions such as touching the back of the neck while washing your face or hair, combing your hair, or buttoning the back of a blouse are difficult to perform.
Frozen shoulder treatment
In the early stages of frozen shoulder, pain relievers, local injections, and physical therapy are used to reduce pain and inflammation, while exercise therapy helps restore the range of motion of the stiff shoulder joint. Surgery is performed if there is no improvement after long-term treatment.
The treatment methods for frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) vary depending on the cause.
Frozen shoulder caused by repetitive shoulder movements during activities such as tennis, swimming, and baseball.
Administer anti-inflammatory medication, apply cold or hot packs, and perform electrical stimulation. Avoid excessive outward lifting or rotating movements of the shoulder joint, and engage in exercises that strengthen the muscles involved in shoulder rotation.
Frozen shoulder caused by calcification of the tendon
Cold compress, taking anti-inflammatory medication, and administering injections that mix lidocaine and steroids to the affected area are performed. When pain decreases, appropriate exercise within a safe range should be done to prevent joint stiffness.
Frozen shoulder caused by adhesion of the joint capsule
In this case, heat therapy, passive and active shoulder exercises within an appropriate range, isometric strengthening exercises for the neck and shoulders, pendulum exercises, and finger wall climbing exercises are effective. Pendulum exercises involve hanging the arm in a straight line with the face facing downward, letting the painful arm hang, and moving the arm back and forth like a pendulum.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) can improve with continuous treatment. However, it can take quite a long time to recover. Therefore, it is important to receive ongoing treatment through accurate diagnosis and consistent exercise therapy.
