A good season for walking... How arthritis patients can enjoy healthily

These days when the autumn leaves are changing color, many people are planning outings. Physical activities like hiking, which allow you to fully enjoy the autumn foliage, are also considered. However, middle-aged and older adults with degenerative arthritis have many concerns because walking excessively can be harmful to knee health. We asked Professor Lee Hyo-beom of the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital about ways for patients with degenerative arthritis to enjoy walks without burden.
 
 

◇Cartilage wears down from the inside of the knee, leading to bowlegs and pain

 

The knee joint connecting the femur and tibia has cartilage that protects the joint. Continuous use of the joint gradually wears down the cartilage that acts as a cushion between the bones, causing the bones to come into direct contact. This process can lead to inflammation and pain.

 

Degenerative arthritis is an age-related disease that occurs with aging, and it appears when joints are used extensively or for a long time without a clear cause. According to the National Disease Statistics by the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, last year, among approximately 4.3 million patients who visited hospitals for degenerative joint disease, about 3.87 million were over 50 years old, accounting for roughly 90% of all patients over 50.

Degenerative arthritis mainly causes the inside of the knee to wear out, leading the legs to gradually become bow-legged. In the early stages, symptoms are mild enough to be ignored, but if left untreated, walking may become difficult later on, so early medical consultation is necessary. Initially, conservative treatments such as posture correction, medication, and local therapy are sufficient. However, if arthritis worsens and non-surgical methods do not improve symptoms, surgical options such as arthroscopic surgery, osteotomy, or artificial joint replacement are performed.

 

◇If there is no pain, walk for one or two hours a day to strengthen muscles

 

Patients with degenerative arthritis have damaged joint cartilage, so walking for a long time increases the pressure on the joints. This can promote inflammation and worsen pain. However, light walking exercise can help improve symptoms by strengthening the muscles around the joints. Experts recommend walking for one to two hours a day within the pain-free range. Before walking, it is advisable to do 5 to 10 minutes of stretching to relax the knees or lower back joints.

 

Since degenerative arthritis is primarily caused by aging, there is no need to be overly cautious about food. However, maintaining an appropriate weight is essential because excess weight increases the pressure on the joints. Additionally, repetitive strenuous movements and poor posture can lead to degenerative changes in the joints, so caution is necessary. Strengthening muscles through moderate exercise and maintaining the range of motion of the joints are crucial for preventing arthritis. If walking is difficult, swimming, indoor cycling, and stretching, which place less stress on the joints, can be helpful.
