Even when exercising, it is necessary to be cautious if you have varicose veins.
Varicose veins are a condition where blood flows backward due to valve damage in the veins, causing the veins to enlarge and protrude through the skin. Even if the veins do not protrude outward, persistent early symptoms such as leg fatigue, swelling, pain, and numbness may indicate varicose veins.
Kim Geon-woo, Director of the Varicose Vein Center at Mint Hospital, emphasized, "Recently, more people are building their bodies through exercise, but if you have varicose veins, you should be cautious with weight and strength training exercises that put a lot of strain on your abdomen and legs."
He said, "In the case of aerobic exercise like running, the muscle contractions and relaxations that occur during exercise help blood circulation, but for patients with varicose veins caused by issues with the venous valves, it can actually worsen reflux symptoms," and added, "However, not exercising at all can weaken calf muscles, which may lead to varicose veins appearing in other areas," recommending appropriate exercise.
According to Director Kim Geon-woo, swimming takes place in water, so gravity does not act on the legs, which is beneficial as it reduces the load on the lower body. Repetitive leg movements help promote venous blood circulation, strengthen the vein walls, and assist in maintaining continuous blood flow.
Walking has a lower risk of injury compared to running, which puts strain on joints such as the ankles, knees, and hips, and can also strengthen muscle function. During this process, it helps reduce leg swelling, prevents blood from pooling, and alleviates the heavy feeling in the legs.
Sky Bicycle stimulates the thighs and calves, helping to relax tense leg muscles and promote smooth blood circulation, which is effective in preventing the worsening of varicose veins. Yoga and full-body stretching are also beneficial exercises in a similar context.
These exercises should never be performed excessively, as they only partially improve symptoms such as heavy legs, swelling, and blood circulation, but do not address the underlying issues like protruding veins. Therefore, if symptoms are severe, appropriate treatment should be sought.
Recently, minimally invasive non-surgical treatments are more active than surgical procedures. These include thermal ablation such as laser and radiofrequency closure for problematic veins, tissue adhesives like VenaSeal to attach problematic vessels, and sclerotherapy with Clarivein to harden the veins. It is advisable to check individual vascular conditions, recovery time, and whether to wear compression stockings to receive appropriate treatment.
Director Kim Geon-woo advised, "The important thing is an accurate diagnosis to confirm whether treatment is necessary. According to the treatment guidelines of the Phlebology Society, after assessing the reflux status and blood flow velocity of the vessels through Doppler ultrasound, a treatment plan should be established."

Sky Bicycle is nice.
I used to ride sky bicycles a lot in the past.
These days, I mostly focus on stretching.
It would be good to add this as well.
