Sharing early photos of gout. Early intervention is important.
Gout is important to respond quickly in the early stages. Initial symptoms include sudden pain and swelling in the joints. It usually begins in the big toe joint, but pain can also occur in other joints such as the ankle, knee, wrist, and fingers. These pains typically start suddenly at night, and the affected joint may become red and hot, often accompanied by severe pain.
As an initial response, it is important to rest the affected joint. Avoid using the painful joint and rest comfortably. Applying cold packs can help relieve pain and swelling; it is recommended to place an ice pack or a cold damp cloth on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. Additionally, adequate hydration is necessary. Drinking more than 2 liters of water a day helps to eliminate uric acid from the body.
In cases of severe pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or medications like colchicine can be used, but medication use must be decided in consultation with a doctor. Dietary therapy is also important. It is recommended to avoid foods high in purines and to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables. In particular, it is advisable to avoid red meat, seafood, and alcohol.
Properly managing symptoms early on can reduce the frequency and severity of gout attacks in the long term. Ignoring or neglecting symptoms can worsen pain or cause permanent damage to the joints, so it is important to respond quickly and consult a doctor when symptoms appear.
