I often have water buildup in my knee... Can I exercise hard?

I have been suffering from cartilage softening in my left knee for over 10 years...

As I get older, my arthritis will probably get worse;;; I also have no muscle in my body...

Recently, I had very severe knee pain, so I went to the orthopedic clinic and had an ultrasound, and it turns out both knees were swollen with fluid.

Fortunately, it's not too cold, so there's no need to remove it.

I'm glad to hear that just taking medication, receiving physical therapy, and exercising as usual will be enough...

Certainly, knee pain doesn't completely go away, so every now and then the pain comes back.

Since the joints are all connected, when one area experiences pain, it seems to trigger a psychological response to protect the painful part without realizing it. As a result, due to supporting other areas, it often happens that although the knee is actually hurting, the pain shifts to the opposite ankle, pelvis, or lower back.

These days, I'm not sure if it's due to knee pain, but my left leg seems to swell a lot above and below the knee, and my calf also swells quite a bit. When I put on my clothes in the morning, my loose pants often feel very tight only around my left calf.

Ultimately, if the fundamental cause is not addressed, the pain seems to persist endlessly.

There are many cases where the injured area is re-injured or chronic pain continues to persist.

Recently, I started doing Pilates and began personal training at the gym to address the root cause.

Haha, my goal was to somehow straighten my crooked body and strengthen the areas around the painful spots to alleviate the pain.

Maybe it's because my body was really damaged, but keeping up with exercise is so overwhelming.

I took a 15-session Pilates course individually, but my whole body was screaming, and I was experiencing severe headaches, possibly due to exercise-related stress. I felt like I was being dragged to slaughter, so I ultimately finished the course with 15 sessions.

I took a little break and recently started health personal training classes.

As I thought... haha, maybe it's because of my weak body that keeping up with the class is difficult.

I've been playing table tennis for over 15 years, but I still wonder how I managed to live my life playing table tennis...

I have very little muscle in my body and no strength, and perhaps because I played table tennis, my body is extremely asymmetrical;;;

My left arm and left leg are very weak. Of course, osteoarthritis of the left knee is also a major cause.

Lower body exercises are essential for building muscle;;;

Whenever I just do a run, my legs shake like a newborn foal... lol

I did 15 sets, but my legs gave out, and I couldn't walk to get water;;;;;

When I go to the gym, others are lifting heavy weights and working out intensely, haha, but I just watch like a meerkat.

Today is leg day again, but already the fear is creeping in...

But the problem is that the hospital also says not to do running exercises and to do other types of exercise, and the health PT also says that I need to fix my knee pain while exercising...

My knee pain is quite severe, and I wonder if I can continue doing lower body exercises like this...

Since experts are explaining and teaching me, I trust and am doing it...

Haha, I'm trying my best with my weak body... but I really can't go much lower;;;

When people exercise, perhaps due to the influence of dopamine, they often don't realize they're hurting themselves, but in reality, it can have negative effects... They say that exercising with proper posture prevents injuries, but...

When actually exercising, no matter how much you try to maintain proper posture, it can be difficult for some muscles to cooperate, making it inevitably hard to keep the correct posture during exercise.

I'm really determined to exercise, but I wonder if I'm just wasting money and damaging my body even more???

Reasons for fluid buildup in the knee

The fluid inside the joint, called synovial fluid, nourishes the cartilage, helps the joint move smoothly, and disperses the pressure applied to the joint.

Joint fluid is produced in a region called the synovium, which maintains a balance by absorbing existing joint fluid to produce new joint fluid. When trauma occurs due to reasons such as impact or aging, inflammation develops in the synovial tissue caused by various factors, leading the synovium to secrete excessive amounts of joint fluid. As a result, a large amount of joint fluid accumulates in the joint, which manifests as swelling or fluid buildup in the knee.

Self-treatment when water accumulates in the knee

Rest: When experiencing knee pain and swelling, avoid activities that put weight on the joint as much as possible.

Cold compress: Apply a cold compress for 15-20 minutes every 2-4 hours to control pain and swelling. Direct ice application is not recommended.

Keep your knees elevated: When lying down, use a pillow under your knees to keep them higher than your heart.

Medication intake: Antipyretic analgesics are effective in reducing pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are effective in controlling inflammation and pain.

Muscle exercise: If your thigh muscles are weak, it is good to strengthen your thigh muscles to reduce the burden on your knees.

Weight management: If you engage in activities that put a heavy load on your weight, losing weight is the way to reduce the burden on your knees.
