Severe pain on the back of the hand. I had a ganglion cyst removal surgery at Hospital W.

After giving birth to my second child and about a year old, my hands hurt so much.

The second one has an fall sensor, so whenever he lies on the floor, he cries, and I always hold him.

Since I was the oldest, I took care of the first child and raised the second, which was really difficult.

I used my hands a lot all day and kept holding the child, so my hands and arms were very sore.

When I felt severe pain, my back of the hand was so sore that it was difficult to pick up objects and hard to hold chopsticks.

Oh!!

But at some point, I noticed a lump had formed on the back of my right hand.

But that lump kept getting bigger...

When I went to the orthopedic clinic near my house, they said it was a ganglion cyst.

My wrist pain was very severe, and my hip also grew larger, so I was told to go to a large hospital.

After 고민, I went to W Hospital, the most famous hospital in Daegu and Gyeongbuk.

You evaluated the location, movement, and sensation of the lump on my wrist, and checked the internal condition with imaging tests such as ultrasound.

The lump was popped with a syringe at the local hospital, but it recurred again.

Since the cyst is large and causing severe pain, they suggested removing it through surgery.

Daegu W Hospital, where I had surgery, is the first specialized hand surgery hospital in the Daegu area. It is a renowned hospital capable of performing surgeries for hand numbness, arthritis, fractures, tumors, burns, wrist pain, trauma, congenital deformities, and also specializes in microsurgical reconstruction.

A firm lump has formed on the wrist / pain when pressing the lump / stiffness and severe wrist pain when rotating the wrist

For those who, like me, experience severe hand pain and feel pain every time they pick up something ✋

Someone with a lump that can be felt on the wrist and that seems to be gradually enlarging ✋

You know from experience. It was so painful that daily life was difficult.

I will talk about the ganglion cyst I experienced on my wrist.

Causes of wrist ganglion cyst

1️⃣ Wrist ganglion is a non-cancerous cyst that occurs in the wrist, also called a periarticular cyst of the wrist.

2️⃣ The exact cause is unclear, but it is believed to be related to trauma, overuse, inflammatory diseases, and other factors.

3. Repeated stimulation of blister membranes due to overuse causes excessive proliferation of fibrous tissue, leading to the formation of a lump.

The symptoms may include dorsum pain, tenderness, and swelling.

I had a cyst removed through surgery, and the pain has disappeared, but I am cautious when using my wrist and always taking care of it.

There are also non-surgical treatment methods and physical therapy options.

Surgical treatment for wrist ganglion removal

Assessment of the appropriateness of the timing of surgery

Surgery is considered when symptoms are severe and do not respond to conservative treatment.

The lump was large, and at first I tried to burst it with a syringe, but since it recurred, they said surgery would be a better option.

Consulting with a doctor is the most important.

Advantages of the surgical procedure

Continuous pain relief

Hand function improvement

Aesthetic improvement of the bump

Disadvantages of the surgical procedure

There was some pain or swelling after the surgery. Symptoms vary from person to person.

They said it might leave a scar, but since my lump was so large, I do have a scar now, but it doesn't stand out clearly.

This is a scar from a ganglion cyst removal surgery. It's my hand. Even though 10 years have passed since the surgery, the scar is still there.

Non-surgical treatment for wrist ganglion cysts

Physical therapy

Relieve pain and stiffness with exercises and stretches that move the wrists and fingers.

Reduce strain with wrist supports or splints

Injection therapy / Steroids

Pain and inflammation are reduced.

4. Tips for prevention and management of wrist ganglion cysts

1️⃣ Using the keyboard properly

Improve wrist posture and reduce tension with an ergonomically designed keyboard.

2️⃣ Limiting finger movement

Take frequent breaks and relax your fingers with finger exercises when using a computer or smartphone for a long time.

3️⃣ Wrist stretching

Rotate, extend, and bend your wrists every 5 to 10 minutes to reduce the risk of wrist ganglion cysts.

This is something I always do, and it works really well.

4️⃣ Using Cold Compresses

Apply an ice pack to your wrist to reduce swelling and pain.

5️⃣ Wrist splint

If you have frequent activity, wear a wrist brace to reduce the load on your wrist.

6️⃣ Consult with a doctor

If you experience persistent pain or discomfort, consult a doctor early for prompt treatment.

If you keep delaying, the pain will worsen and the cyst will grow larger.

It has already been 10 years since the surgery.

She said that because her body was weakened due to childbirth and she kept holding the baby, it put a lot of strain on her wrists.

They said that using the wrist excessively increases the risk of developing a wrist ganglion cyst.

Currently, the cyst has been removed through surgery and the wrist pain has also disappeared, but...

My wrists hurt a lot on days when I use my hands a lot.

Please minimize the strain on your hands and stretch frequently.
