Is injection therapy effective for treating spinal stenosis?
My mother has been suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis at L4-L5 for a long time. In early March, she underwent sleep endoscopy, and her back pain persisted, possibly due to strain. I am sharing her experience of receiving treatment for spinal stenosis at the anesthesiology and pain medicine department.
What is spinal stenosis?
The spine plays a role in supporting our body's structure and is made up of 33 bones. The vertebrae are hollow in the middle, forming a tube called the spinal canal. Inside this spinal canal pass the spinal cord nerves. When this spinal canal narrows due to various causes, compressing the nerves, it is called spinal stenosis, and treatment for spinal stenosis becomes necessary.
What are the symptoms of spinal stenosis?
Spinal stenosis causes lower back pain that worsens when you straighten your back and improves when you bend forward. Additionally, there is a tingling sensation in the legs, and you may experience a cramping sensation in one or both legs.
There is a phenomenon where the pain worsens when standing or walking for a long time.
3. What are the treatments for spinal stenosis?
In the early stages of spinal stenosis treatment, rest and physical therapy alone can lead to improvement. In particular, maintaining proper posture and consistently doing stretching exercises whenever possible are important for treating spinal stenosis. However, as time passes and aging progresses, the spinal canal narrows further, leading to more severe pain and walking difficulties, which may require surgery to treat spinal stenosis.
4. What type of injection treatment did you receive from the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine for spinal stenosis?
I have undergone physical therapy multiple times due to spinal stenosis pain. This time, because the pain was severe, I visited the anesthesiology and pain medicine department for injection treatment, and after consulting with the doctor, I received 8 injections in my lower back.
The types of injections are Hyalase and S-Prolo B. Hyalase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid and is effective in tissue regeneration and inflammation relief, while S-Prolo B is an injection that induces natural healing by causing cell proliferation at the inflammation site with high-concentration glucose. After confirming the treatment, it was definitely effective in relieving pain, and I also took the prescribed medication together. I plan to visit the hospital again in two weeks to monitor the pain pattern.
I shared about epidural injection therapy for treating spinal stenosis. If the pain is severe, please visit the hospital and receive injection treatment.
