Hearing loss is a 'red alert' for health. It increases the risk of fractures from falls and dementia due to cognitive decline. Learn about lifestyle habits that help prevent hearing loss.

 

◇ Hearing loss impairs brain function

 

Hearing loss also impairs brain function.

 

Among them, 'cognitive function' related to dementia is the most affected. The endless sound signals in daily life continuously stimulate the brain. However, when hearing deteriorates, this process disappears. An evaluation of cognitive function based on hearing ability was conducted on populations over 50 years old, and it was found that for every 10-decibel change in hearing range, cognitive function test scores significantly declined.

There are also research findings. Poor hearing that leads to disconnection in conversations increases the risk of dementia. When people converse, they talk endlessly, listen, and think, stimulating the brain. However, if they cannot properly hear the other person, they tend to avoid conversations altogether.


Set the maximum volume to 60% or less

 

Hearing loss that has been damaged is difficult to reverse. Therefore, preventing hearing loss is the most important. The only way to prevent it is to avoid exposure to noise. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends keeping the volume below 60% when using portable audio devices and limiting usage to within 60 minutes a day to protect hearing. It is advisable not to use earphones in noisy outdoor environments such as public transportation. Increasing the volume can strain the ears. In noisy places, it is good to find a quiet space for at least 10 minutes every hour to give your ears a rest.

 

 

Alcohol, cigarettes, and coffee can stimulate the auditory nerve and affect blood vessel constriction, so they should be avoided or consumed in moderation. Eating foods rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E also helps prevent hearing loss. According to a study at Severance Hospital, among individuals aged 50 to 80, those who consumed a high amount of vitamin C (top 25%) had better hearing compared to those who consumed less (bottom 25%).

 

 

Representative foods rich in vitamin A include persimmons, spinach, and chives, while vitamin C is abundant in chili peppers, kiwis, and strawberries. Vitamin E is found mostly in nuts and fish. Additionally, it is advisable to visit an otolaryngologist regularly for hearing tests to monitor ear health.

 

Meanwhile, if hearing loss is suspected, you should immediately visit a hospital and wear a hearing aid. Hearing aids are more effective when the hearing impairment is less severe.
