Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo can be cured with therapeutic exercises!
One of the most effective methods for treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is 'canalith repositioning therapy,' which can restore the displaced otoliths to their normal position. Below are the representative exercises used in the treatment of BPPV.
Epley canalith repositioning exercise is the most widely used treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. This exercise consists of the following steps.
- Sit on the bed, stretch your legs, and turn your head 45 degrees toward the side that causes dizziness.
- Lie down quickly with your head turned so that your head slightly extends off the bed. Maintain this position for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Then slowly turn your head in the opposite direction and hold for about 30 seconds.
- Turn your entire body and lie on the opposite shoulder in a similar manner. Slowly turn your head so that your face faces the floor.
- Slowly sit up and lift your head for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- This movement can be repeated several times a day, and if pain or dizziness occurs, it is best to stop immediately and consult a professional.
Semont's BPPV treatment exercise involves more intense movements and consists of the following steps.
- Sit on the bed and turn your head 45 degrees toward the healthy side.
- Quickly lie down on the side where dizziness is felt, keeping the head in a fixed position. Maintain this posture for about 30 seconds.
- Then, quickly turn your body in the opposite direction, tilting your head toward the floor, and lie down on the other side.
- Maintain this posture for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, then slowly stand up.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) treatment exercises should primarily be performed under the guidance of a professional, as they can cause severe dizziness, so caution is necessary.
