Preliminary symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) include dizziness accompanied by other symptoms

In addition to dizziness, other warning signs of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may also appear. I thought I would share this information in case there are people who, like me, suspect they have BPPV or are curious about other symptoms that occur alongside dizziness.

  • The most characteristic symptom of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is undoubtedly dizziness. Dizziness occurs when suddenly moving the head or changing posture, and this dizziness can last from a few seconds to several minutes. In particular, if dizziness worsens when getting out of bed in the morning, turning the head, or looking up, BPPV should be suspected.

  • Preliminary symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) include dizziness accompanied by other symptomsWhen dizziness occurs, it is common to experience rapid eye twitching. This is called 'nystagmus,' which is one of the early warning signs frequently seen in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Eye twitching mainly occurs alongside dizziness and can be checked by oneself through a mirror or by asking someone nearby.
  •
  • Repeated severe dizziness can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting. This occurs when otoliths move within the ear, disrupting the balance sense in the inner ear, and it can be mistaken for gastrointestinal issues. If nausea persists or vomiting occurs, and vestibular neuritis is suspected, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
  •
  • Repeated dizziness can significantly impact daily life, potentially causing psychological anxiety or fear. The fear of sudden dizziness occurring at any moment can lead to reluctance to go out or restrictions in activity. These psychological changes may also be related to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

  • Some patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) also experience tinnitus along with dizziness. If you hear persistent ringing or sounds inside your ear, this could also be a warning sign of BPPV. Tinnitus differs from everyday noise and is more noticeable in quiet environments.
  •
  • Rarely, individuals with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo may experience temporary hearing loss. This occurs because the function of the inner ear where the otoliths are located is temporarily disrupted, and if these symptoms persist, further caution is necessary.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a condition that can recover relatively quickly if detected and treated early, but if left untreated, it can significantly reduce quality of life due to recurrent dizziness. If you experience the warning symptoms of BPPV mentioned above, it is best not to overexert yourself and to visit a hospital for an accurate diagnosis. Health is more precious than anything else.
