Four foods to avoid that may cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
Did you know that benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which disrupts daily life due to sudden dizziness, is also related to diet?
Surprisingly, the food we eat could be a cause of vertigo!
So, then, what foods should we avoid?
Today, I will introduce four foods to avoid in order to prevent benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
- Salty foods: Avoid "salt bombs"! Foods high in salt are one of the main causes of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Excessive salt intake can disrupt the body's fluid balance and negatively affect the inner ear (the part responsible for balance), so it's time to cut back on salty eating habits! Although dishes like jjajangmyeon, ramen, and salty kimchi are common in our daily lives, if you want to prevent BPPV, it's better to enjoy them in moderation.
2. Caffeine: Delay your morning coffee! Isn't it shocking to learn that a cup of coffee in the morning can trigger vertigo? Caffeine is one of the main causes that can worsen vertigo. It can interfere with blood flow in the inner ear and impair balance, so it is advisable to reduce coffee, tea, energy drinks, and similar beverages. If you're worried about vertigo, try switching to decaffeinated drinks!
3. Alcohol: One glass turns into two... Alcohol is a representative food (or beverage?) that can negatively affect BPPV. Alcohol can disrupt the balance sense in the inner ear and dilate blood vessels, potentially worsening BPPV symptoms. The reason you feel more dizzy than usual after drinking is related to this. So, how about keeping tonight's drinking session light?
4. Greasy foods: 'Grease' can also be a cause of BPPV! Greasy foods are also potential causes of BPPV. A high-fat diet can impair inner ear function and affect blood flow. You might think of fried foods, chicken, and hamburgers, but if you want to prevent BPPV, it's best to eat them only occasionally.
