The 'this illness' that doesn't listen well... If left untreated, it can cause 'dementia'?

I see many stories about sudden hearing loss related to health concerns.

It was coming up.

Even if it is not sudden deafness, due to aging

I couldn't ignore the hearing loss.

Neglecting hearing loss can lead to brain function decline.

They say it exists.

I hope this information about hearing loss is helpful.

The 'this illness' that doesn't listen well... If left untreated, it can cause 'dementia'?

Neglecting hearing loss, which is a condition where words or sounds are not heard well, increases the risk of developing dementia and requires proactive treatment.

Hearing loss causes inconvenience in daily life by itself, but it is also a cause of dementia. Among the contributing factors to dementia, hearing loss accounts for about 8%, making it the most significant among the clearly identified causes (40%).

Initial hearing loss begins with the inability to hear soft sounds. It soon progresses to a level where even loud sounds around you are difficult to hear. In fact, there are reports indicating that in populations over 50 years old, every 10-decibel (dB) change in hearing ability is significantly associated with a decline in cognitive function scores. When hearing loss causes difficulty in properly understanding sounds and speech, it reduces activity in the brain regions responsible for recognizing language, as if the brain enters a 'dormant state.' If this period extends, it gradually impairs overall cognitive functions related to these brain regions.

Therefore, when talking with my family as usual

△Difficulty hearing the speech clearly or

It is difficult to hear the TV sound.

△If you are unable to hear sounds and are experiencing difficulties in daily life

You need to visit the nearest medical institution.

In Korea, it is estimated that half of the elderly over 70 suffer from hearing loss, making it quite common, but only about half of those actually use hearing aids or cochlear implants. When hearing loss is first detected, it is important to promptly pursue hearing correction. The sooner the correction is made, the more it can minimize cognitive decline and maximize the prevention of dementia.

Professor Sun Woo-woong of Gachon University Gil Medical Center's Otolaryngology Department said, "Hearing loss not only hampers daily life by making it difficult to hear surrounding sounds but can also lead to the deterioration of brain function, so caution is necessary." ☝️ "After middle age, it is advisable to have a hearing test once a year to check for hearing loss."
