Sinusitis treatment, is surgery always necessary? Children's treatment

I looked into various options before my son's sinusitis treatment.

 

 

 

 

These days, my son keeps sniffling.
It seemed like the cold was lasting a long time.
At first, I thought it was just a simple cold.
I was diagnosed with sinusitis (sinus infection) at the hospital.

 

I am scheduled to receive treatment for sinusitis soon.
Maybe it will be helpful to others as well.
I will summarize the information I have found.

 

Sinusitis symptoms are different from a cold.

My son's symptoms initially seemed similar to a cold.
Cough, runny nose, sore throat...

However, strangely, the symptoms haven't gone away for over 2 to 3 weeks. 😢

 

The symptoms of sinusitis I found are as follows:

 

- Persistent yellow nasal discharge or nasal congestion
- Feeling of the nose going back into the throat (post-nasal drip)
- Bad breath, headache, pressure around the eyes
- Children often experience decreased concentration, picky eating, and open-mouth breathing.

 

To be precise, it lasts longer than a simple cold,
They say yellow nasal discharge is characteristic.

 

 

The main causes of sinusitis are cold viruses and allergic rhinitis.
Especially when the immune system is weak or
It is said that children with narrow nasal structures are considered attractive.

 

My son also has allergic rhinitis.
The doctor said that it seems to be the cause.

 

 

 

Fortunately, my son still doesn't need surgery.
We decided to start with medication treatment.

Usually, sinusitis treatment is divided like this.

 

1. Pharmacological treatment (first-line)
- Antibiotics, antihistamines, mucosal constrictors, etc.
If there is no improvement after taking it for 2 to 3 weeks, additional tests are needed.

2. Nasal irrigation & steroid spray
- Effective in reducing mucosal swelling
- Nasal irrigation is important to do daily at home.

3. Sinusitis surgery
- To be performed if not cured by medication or in case of recurrent relapses
A method of removing inflamed areas using an endoscope
Most surgeries allow for same-day discharge, and serious side effects are rare.

 

 

 

 

If there is still a response to medication, surgery may not be necessary.
I have heard that there are many cases where sinusitis can be completely cured.

So, I try not to worry too much. 😢

 

Sinusitis, is it contagious?

 

I looked it up separately because I was curious about this too.
Sinusitis itself is not a contagious disease, but
In cases where the cause is a cold virus or bacteria
It is said that it can be transmitted like a cold.

 

Especially when a highly contagious cold is spreading among children
They say you should be more thorough with personal hygiene.

I highly recommend that you go to the hospital to check.

 

I just watched and waited, and when it was over two weeks
I went to the hospital because I felt something was wrong.
My child said, "My nose is blocked, so I can't concentrate."ㅠ
