(Concern) Is it okay to start orthodontics in my late twenties?

My teeth are relatively even, but I have malocclusion. Is it called overjet? When I close my mouth, my front teeth almost completely cover my lower teeth. Since this is quite noticeable, it keeps bothering me... It also makes my mouth look protruded... However, friends who have had orthodontic treatment around me say that unless it's orthodontic correction, they don't recommend it because it can weaken the gums, so I'm 고민이에요.
