Sharing my experience with experiencing orthostatic hypotension.
Feeling dizzy when trying to stand up from a sitting or lying position is a symptom that anyone might experience at least once. If the dizziness is more severe, it may be worth suspecting orthostatic hypotension. I often feel dizzy and need to stop and rest in a position for about 10 seconds before my vision clears up and returns to normal. When the symptoms became severe and I visited a hospital, I was told it was orthostatic hypotension. Orthostatic hypotension is a condition where blood pressure drops suddenly when standing up quickly from a lying or sitting position. It is accompanied by dizziness and cold sweat. At the hospital I visited, they administered IV fluids while I was resting and said there was no need for specific medication, advising me to manage it well in daily life. They explained that this phenomenon is caused by low blood pressure. I usually have relatively low blood pressure.
The temporary causes of orthostatic hypotension that anyone may experience at least once include bleeding or dehydration. In such cases, since it is temporary, removing the cause will improve the symptoms.
The persistent causes of orthostatic hypotension include heart disease and hormonal disorders, but it can improve with accurate diagnosis and treatment at a hospital.
Symptoms of orthostatic hypotension include dizziness and headaches, especially a heavy feeling in the head similar to a migraine, often accompanied by a heavy sensation in the eyes. Poor blood circulation can also cause fatigue, drowsiness, and weakness. Additionally, since blood pressure drops suddenly, symptoms such as blurred vision and a blackout in front of the eyes may occur. In severe cases, fainting can happen, which can be a dangerous situation.
I also experienced symptoms such as cold sweats and dizziness, to the point where I had to hold my head with my hand to keep my vision clear, and I felt like I was about to collapse at any moment, which was really difficult.
Even if I visit the hospital two or three times, they don't prescribe any medication because it's considered a temporary phenomenon, so I often fear the dizziness. That's why I realized I have no choice but to take good care of myself regularly.
First, I try not to get up suddenly. When I get up, I move my body slowly, and when lying down, I first perform small movements like lifting my feet for a moment, similar to exercise, before changing my position. This means moving slowly to prevent sudden changes in blood pressure.
And I try to drink a lot of water. Drinking plenty of water increases blood volume and raises blood pressure, which helps prevent low blood pressure. I also try to eat foods that are good for low blood pressure, with some of the main foods being spinach, carrots, cheese, beef, and eggs, which are known to be beneficial for blood pressure.
I am taking supplements after experiencing orthostatic hypotension. Nutrients that are good for orthostatic hypotension include iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid, which help with red blood cell production and prevent anemia.
Regular exercise is also very important in preventing and managing orthostatic hypotension by improving blood circulation and heart function.
And if the symptoms of orthostatic hypotension are severe or persistent, please be sure to visit a hospital for a medical examination.
