Military: "Pocheon fighter jet bombing accident was caused by pilot input error"

The Air Force announced that the fighter jet bombing accident during the U.S.-South Korea joint training exercise conducted around Pocheon Seungjin Science Training Center in Gyeonggi on the 6th, which resulted in civilian casualties, was caused by a pilot’s input error of coordinates.

An Air Force official stated during a press briefing regarding the fighter jet accidental bombing incident, "It was confirmed through the pilot's testimony that the pilot entered incorrect coordinates during the flight preparation process," and added, "During live-fire training, the original coordinates are entered, and there is also a process of visually identifying the target."

A related official from the Joint Chiefs of Staff also stated, "There is a procedure to verify coordinates whether on the ground or in the air," and "We currently understand that a mistake was made during this process. There is also a procedure in place to verify and drop weapons after additional checks in the air."

On that day, an accidental explosion occurred during a training exercise where two KF-16s each dropped four MK-82 general-purpose bombs at the firing range.

A Ministry of National Defense official stated that the cause of the two KF-16s simultaneously causing an accidental missile strike was due to "Aircraft 1 inputting the wrong coordinates," and that "the Air Force needs to further verify the firing sequence of Aircraft 2's pilot."

The Ministry of National Defense announced that all scheduled live-fire training exercises will be suspended until the cause of this incident is clearly identified.

According to the Air Force and fire authorities, around 10:04 a.m. on this day, eight air-to-ground bombs from the Air Force fell on a private residence in Nogok-ri, Idong-myeon, Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi Province.

A total of 15 people have been injured so far, and it is understood that among the three civilians who were on a freight truck passing near where the shells fell, two have sustained serious injuries.
