Sung Sim Dang's 'Strawberry Steamer,' which wasn't selling well, was renamed and became a huge hit... "Wife's idea"
The original name of 'Strawberry Siroo' was 'Strawberry Chocolate Cake.' This 'renaming' marked the beginning of the cake's explosive popularity.
Im Young-jin, CEO of the famous bakery 'Sungsimdang' in Daejeon, revealed the secret to the success of the strawberry siru. On the SBS Special 'The Bread Part 1' broadcasted on the 11th, CEO Im said, "The original name of Strawberry Siru was 'Strawberry Chocolate Cake'," and explained, "The black sheet was layered and dark like a siru rice cake, so we changed the name to 'Strawberry Siru'." He added, "That became a big hit," and "When it was called Strawberry Chocolate Cake, it hardly sold, but after changing the name to Strawberry Siru, sales increased significantly." CEO Im also mentioned, "(The name Strawberry Siru) was an idea from my wife, Kim Mi-jin, Director of Sungsimdang."
CEO Lim said, "Strawberry Steamer became a hit, so from now on, everything will be part of the Steamer series," and added, "Now, with Night Steamer and Tangerine Steamer, we have seasonal cakes all year round."

The "Strawberry Siru" cake, released by Seongsimdang in February 2023, is gaining explosive popularity nationwide and driving Seongsimdang's sales. It is made by layering strawberries and cream on a black brownie sheet and stacking them in layers, with the abundant strawberries on top being the highlight. As it gained a reputation as a "cost-effective cake" on social media platforms, it has become a target for "open run" customers (waiting before the store opens to enter). The 2.3 kg Strawberry Siru is currently sold for 49,000 won.
In April of last year, Seongsimdang's sales for 2023 were reported to be 124.3 billion won, more than doubling from the previous year (81.7 billion won). It was the first time a single bakery, not a franchise, exceeded 100 billion won in sales. The operating profit was 31.5 billion won, surpassing major bakery companies such as Paris Bâtisserie (19.9 billion won) operated by Paris Croissant and CJ Foodville (21.4 billion won) which operates Tous Les Jours, making it a notable achievement.
