Lunar New Year holiday with snow, rain, and freezing cold... "Be cautious of icy roads when traveling to and from hometown"
This week was warm, but it was a battle against fine dust...
They say it's cold during Seol.
Miman will be relatively okay, but I'm worried that the roads will freeze when it snows and rains ㅠㅠ
During the Lunar New Year holiday period, significant weather changes are expected around the 27th, so please take care of your health and drive safely~
During this year's Lunar New Year holiday, strong cold weather and frequent snow and rain are expected nationwide. By the weekend when people start returning home, the weather will be mostly clear or cloudy across the country, but the snow and rain that fall during the holiday period may freeze, so extra caution is needed for traffic safety on the return journey.
Kim Young-jun, a forecast analyst at the Korea Meteorological Administration, stated at the regular forecast briefing on the 23rd, "The early part of the Lunar New Year holiday will start with mild weather, but from the 27th, snow and rain are expected across the country, and heavy snow warnings may be issued for inland areas. Cold air will also move south strongly on the 28th and 29th, bringing various hazardous weather conditions."
Analyst Kim explained, "Until the 26th, the weather will generally be clear or cloudy due to the influence of the northwest pressure system," and added, "Starting from the 27th, the area will come under the influence of upper-level pressure troughs and cut-off lows, with expected hazardous weather conditions such as cold waves, heavy snowfall, storm surges, and strong winds."
Furthermore, it is expected that a low-pressure system will approach northwest of our country on the 27th, and between the 28th and 29th, this low-pressure system will move northeastward while a high-pressure system will be positioned to the southwest. It was added that "the pressure system between the low and high-pressure systems will become a strong cold air mass capable of moving southward."
Due to the influence of this barometer, temperatures will drop significantly during the Lunar New Year holiday period, and cold weather accompanied by strong winds will continue.
On the early days of the holiday, the 24th and 25th, the entire country will be mostly clear under a high-pressure system, but east winds will blow, bringing snow and rain mainly along the eastern coast. From the 26th, the weather will gradually become cloudy as the area comes under the edge of the high-pressure system.
On the 27th, snow and rain are expected nationwide, and heavy snowfall is forecasted mainly in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions on the 28th and 29th. Therefore, caution should be exercised for road traffic safety during travel, such as icy roads or icy patches. Attention is also needed regarding the safety of facilities due to accumulated snow weight.
Due to strong winds again, very high waves are expected to persist across the entire sea from the 27th to the 30th, and there is a high likelihood that a storm warning will be issued. Analyst Kim urged travelers to check the operation status of passenger ships carefully when traveling to and from island areas during the holiday.
On the latter part of the holiday, the 30th and 31st, the area will gradually move away from the influence of the upper-level pressure trough and enter the edge of the high-pressure system, resulting in many clouds across the country. However, since the snow and rain that fall may freeze and make the roads slippery, caution should be exercised even on the return journey.
During this Lunar New Year holiday period, temperatures will drop sharply. From the 24th to the 27th, most of the country except the East Coast will be about 5 degrees higher than usual, but from the 28th onward, cold air will flow in, causing temperatures to drop significantly and be about 2 degrees lower than normal.
Especially on the 29th, the day of Lunar New Year, the wind is expected to make the perceived temperature feel even colder. From the 30th, temperatures will gradually recover to normal levels.
On the 27th, the morning low temperature will be between -2 and 7 degrees, and the daytime high will be between 3 and 10 degrees, but on the 29th, the morning low temperature will drop to between -9 and 4 degrees, and the daytime high will be between -1 and 7 degrees.
The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that the timing, area, and type of precipitation may vary depending on the strength and position of the low-pressure system and continental high-pressure system affecting the region after the 27th, and urged people to check the latest weather information.
Jang Dong-eon, the head of the Korea Meteorological Administration, stated, "During this Lunar New Year holiday period, significant weather changes are expected around the 27th, and hazardous weather conditions are also anticipated," adding, "Since the forecast is somewhat distant and thus uncertain, we ask for continued interest in the weather during the Lunar New Year holiday."
