A survey found that the public will spend an average of 190,000 won on gifts for this year's Lunar New Year holiday. The most common budget per gift was under 50,000 won. Fruits were the most preferred Lunar New Year gifts. Although beef has traditionally held the top spot, fruits have gained popularity since the last Chuseok holiday.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) on the 11th, a specialized survey conducted from December 3 to 8 of last year with approximately 3,000 people found that the most preferred item for Lunar New Year supplies and gift sets was mixed fruit sets, accounting for 16.8%.
Apples (16.2%), beef (16.1%), tangerines (9.0%), pears (8.6%), and grapes (4.7%) are in order. Last year's Lunar New Year saw a preference for mixed fruit sets, and during Chuseok, apples ranked first, indicating that the preference for fruit remains high.
The average purchase budget is around 190,000 won. The breakdown is 10,000 to 20,000 won (29.1%), 20,000 to 30,000 won (23.9%), 5,000 to 10,000 won (21.7%), and less than 5,000 won (8.9%).
43% of the gifts had a budget of 50,000 won or less, which was the most common. Recently, as consumers increasingly seek cost-effective options due to the high inflation trend, large supermarkets and other retailers are also increasing the proportion of products priced below 50,000 won.
The most common planned purchase time is one week before Lunar New Year (44.6%), followed by around the start of the holiday (25.1%), and two weeks prior (23.2%).
The planned purchase items for the Lunar New Year include beef (25.2%), seasoned vegetables (20.4%), apples (10.5%), and pork (6.4%), in that order. The average purchase cost was estimated to be around 200,000 won. The ranges are 100,000 to 200,000 won (30.0%), 200,000 to 300,000 won (27.1%), 50,000 to 100,000 won (18.3%), and 300,000 to 400,000 won (10.7%).
The proportion of each category in the purchase budget is as follows: livestock products (33%), fruits (26%), vegetables (16%), seafood (14%), and forest products (10%).
In the case of purchase locations, gift sets were primarily bought at large supermarkets, online, and traditional markets in that order. Essential goods were purchased mainly at large supermarkets, traditional markets, and small to medium-sized supermarkets. Compared to last year's Lunar New Year and Chuseok, the rankings were similar, but the trend shows a continuous increase in purchases at large supermarkets.
A T official said, "This Lunar New Year, we recommend gift sets of apples and beef that are more abundant in quantity than last year," and added, "Please take advantage of government support for discounts on agricultural, fishery, and livestock products to prepare economically."
Meanwhile, the intention to return home for Lunar New Year this year is 45.1%, similar to the 47.1% during last year's Chuseok.
