'Severe Cold Wave' at its peak... 82-year-old man dies of hypothermia in front of a convenience store
A man sitting in front of a convenience store in Wonju, Gangwon Province, died from hypothermia.
At around 8:26 a.m. on the 9th, the owner of a convenience store in Taejang-dong, Wonju City, found Mr. Park (82) sitting and not moving for several hours in front of the store and reported it to the police.
Mr. Park was transported to a nearby hospital by 119 but ultimately passed away. The police believe that Mr. Park died from cold-related illnesses such as hypothermia.
On this day, the temperature in the Gangwon region dropped to as low as -20°C in the morning, and Pyeongchang and Daegwallyeong recorded wind chill temperatures of -28.1°C.
Mr. Park is known to be a solitary elderly person who has his living conditions checked by the local administrative welfare center every other day.
Following the 9th, the severe cold wave reached its peak during the morning commute on the 10th.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the temperature in Seoul on that morning was minus 12 degrees Celsius, setting a new record for the coldest temperature of this winter in just one day. The wind was also strong, making the perceived temperature much lower.
Cold wave alerts are currently issued in most regions across the country, with temperatures dropping to -24.9°C in Pyeongchang, -22.1°C in Daegwallyeong, and -18.3°C in Paju.
This cold snap is expected to continue until the morning of the 11th, which is the weekend, and then gradually ease from the afternoon.
