The strongest cold wave of this winter will peak on the 10th and then maintain temperatures around minus 10 degrees Celsius, which is typical for this time of year, from the 12th. Afterwards, around the 16th, cold air from Siberia will descend again, bringing a powerful cold snap to the Korean Peninsula.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration and others on the 9th, the minimum temperature that morning dropped to -25.1°C (Seoraksan), making it the coldest winter (December 2024 to February 2025) so far.

The official temperature in Seoul dropped to -10.2 degrees Celsius. Including the Automatic Weather Station (AWS), the mercury level fell to -12.9 degrees Celsius (Jung-gu).

The perceived temperature dropped to a nationwide low of -37.5°C (Goseong), and in the Seoul metropolitan area, it reached -22.8°C (Gwanaksan). The perceived temperature in Seoul was as low as -17.8°C, and including AWS measurements, it was -22.8°C (Jung-gu).

This severe cold wave is caused by the expansion of the continental high pressure (Siberian high) from China, bringing in cold air at -40 degrees Celsius to the Korean Peninsula.

On the morning of the 10th, a cold wave is expected to reach its peak. The minimum temperature forecasted for the morning is between -21 and -5 degrees Celsius. Kim Young-jun, a forecast analyst at the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, "The temperature will drop further due to radiative cooling from the cold high-pressure system, combined with strong winds."

Subsequently, temperatures are expected to gradually rise and recover to the average level around the 12th (minimum -10 to 0 degrees, maximum 1 to 8 degrees). A Korea Meteorological Administration official stated, "The temperature is rising somewhat as the cold air vortex at an altitude of 5.5 km in the upper atmosphere moves away."

According to numerical forecast models, the next cold snap is expected to be milder than this cold wave. The minimum temperature in Seoul on the 16th is forecasted to be -9°C. Forecast analyst Kim explained, "As the upper-level pressure trough passes, it will bring down the cold air."

Next week, on the 13th and 14th, cloud masses will flow into the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Yeongseo, and on the 15th and 16th, they will affect Jeolla and Jeju. However, it is still unclear whether these clouds will bring snow or rain.

Meanwhile, the snow that has been falling and stopping repeatedly in Chungnam and Honam since the 7th is expected to stop around the 10th. From the 7th to 10th at 10 a.m., up to 29.3 cm (Muju) of snow accumulated. Kim Yebo analyst said, "A lot of heavy snow will fall until the night of the 9th," and added, "Especially in western Jeonbuk, an additional 20 cm of snow may fall, so extra caution is needed for safety."
