'Jeju Air disaster' victims' families insulted, crime rampant... Police deploy 118 officers to begin investigation

As articles insulting and defaming the families of the victims of the Jeju Air disaster have appeared one after another, the police have formed a large dedicated investigation team and launched an investigation. Since the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency is directly overseeing the investigation, strong punishments are expected.

On the 2nd, the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency announced that Director Kim Byung-chan of the Investigation Bureau (Chiean) of the National Investigation Headquarters of the Police Agency has established a dedicated investigation team for malicious posts related to the Jeju Air passenger plane accident within the cyber investigation units of police agencies nationwide. A total of 118 police officers will be assigned to the dedicated investigation team.

The National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency explained, "In response to the ongoing occurrence of defamation, insulting malicious SNS (social networking service) posts and videos related to the recent Jeju Air plane accident victims and their families, we have expanded and reorganized the investigative system."

Meanwhile, they stated, "We will identify and apprehend the suspect through swift and proactive investigation," and "We will promptly delete and block malicious posts."

The Jeonnam Police Investigation Headquarters is currently conducting pre-investigation on a total of four cases, including insult to the bereaved family. The application for a search and seizure warrant has already been completed. Additionally, there have been a total of 64 civil complaints received, including malicious posts, and the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency plans to assign these to the dedicated investigation teams of each provincial police agency.

On the morning of the 29th of last month, flight 7C2216 of Jeju Air, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand, collided with the runway perimeter wall while landing at Muan International Airport, resulting in the deaths of 179 passengers. This is the deadliest aviation accident in the history of domestic incidents.
