If you've made too much coffee in the morning, it might be too good to throw away. Fortunately, there are several ways to utilize leftover coffee. Coffee, especially compared to other foods, becomes more acidic when left out at room temperature. Therefore, once the coffee has cooled, transfer it to a heat-resistant, airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It's best to use it within a day or two. Eating Well, a US health media outlet, offers the following tips for using leftover coffee.

1. Making whipped coffee

Instead of instant coffee, try using leftover coffee, like the popular dalgona coffee. Simmer the leftover coffee with sugar to thicken it, then whip for a few minutes to create a smooth, rich foam. Add ice and milk to enjoy as an afternoon snack, or add cocoa powder to transform it into a mochaccino.

2. Store with coffee ice cubes

Pour the remaining coffee into ice cube trays and freeze. This will maintain its rich flavor without diluting it when added to iced coffee. You can also mix in milk or cream and freeze it to create unique coffee cubes.

3. Add to smoothies

Place coffee ice cubes in a blender and blend with protein powder (vanilla or chocolate is recommended) and milk. Alternatively, store leftover coffee in the refrigerator and blend it into a smoothie with a frozen banana, protein powder, and ice.

4. Use as a baking ingredient

Try using leftover coffee in place of water in dessert recipes like cakes and brownies. It adds a deep, rich flavor, especially when used in boxed mixes.

5. Making Salad Dressing

You can also use the acidity of coffee to make a salad dressing. A coffee-balsamic dressing pairs well with a spinach salad topped with soft cheese, pears, and walnuts.

6. Try a cocktail

If you don't have coffee liqueur, try making your own with leftover coffee. Boil down coffee and brown sugar to create a thick syrup. Add rum, bourbon, or vodka, and season with cinnamon or cloves. Store in a glass bottle and refrigerate for a few days. This coffee syrup can be used in cocktails, served over ice, or drizzled on ice cream.

7. Try using it as a meat marinade

Coffee can be used to tenderize meat. Reduce 1 cup of coffee by one-third, let cool, and then mix with Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, fresh rosemary, pepper, and oil to make a marinade.

8. Use as plant fertilizer

Leftover coffee, like coffee grounds, can also be used as plant fertilizer. Dilute the coffee with water in a 1:3 ratio and pour it into the pot. Coffee is rich in nitrogen, magnesium, and calcium, which strengthen plant stems and promote healthy growth. Applying the diluted coffee once or twice a week will yield positive results.
