Why does yelling "XX!" when angry help relieve stress?
Why does yelling "XX!" when angry help relieve stress?
When you're angry and frustrated, you might find yourself swearing. Swearing can unconsciously make you feel relieved and help release stress. However, there are research findings that actually suggest that swearing can help alleviate stress.
Swearing is closely related to emotions.
Joy, surprise, pain, anger, and even regret—our various emotions are related to profanity. Emma Burn, an expert in profanity culture and author of the book 'Profanity is Good for You,' said, "People form a strong emotional connection with certain languages." In particular, when swearing makes you feel relieved or refreshed, the secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone, decreases.
Additionally, there are studies suggesting that swearing can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. Dr. Husaain from Islamabad Campus University conducted a study on 98 men and 155 women in Pakistan to examine the relationship between the level of swearing and mental health. The study divided participants into lower and higher swearer groups based on their use of profanity. The results showed that individuals who swore more frequently had significantly lower levels of depression.
Swearing can also reduce the physical pain you feel.
A research team at the University of York in the UK asked 71 participants to keep their hands submerged in ice water for as long as they could endure. During this time, some participants continued to swear, while others repeated ordinary words that were not curses. The study found that 73% of the participants who swore kept their hands in the water longer. On average, they endured 31 seconds longer. However, for people who normally swear more frequently, the pain relief effect was less significant, and they also kept their hands submerged for a shorter time. The research team explained that swearing activates the brain's endogenous opioids (natural pain-relieving chemicals), which can reduce pain.
However, swearing is not a universal solution for reducing stress and pain.
It's only a temporary measure. When swearing becomes habitual, it's hard to feel the short, powerful sense of relief that you initially experienced. Instead of swearing, it's better to let out a loud scream or laugh. Laughter not only releases endorphins but also helps in the secretion of other neurotransmitters like enkephalins and oxytocin, which have pain-relieving effects. Additionally, moving muscles helps in the secretion of happiness hormones such as serotonin, and laughter is known to activate about 231 muscles in our body, including facial and core muscles.

I don't really like swearing.
Shouting definitely seems to be helpful.
When you feel frustrated,
Whether in a spacious area or standing on a mountain
If only I could shout or something...
There is a feeling of relief inside.
