The food authorities are launching an on-site investigation as it has been confirmed that some products of Maeil Dairies have been contaminated with cleaning water, causing consumer anxiety to spread.

According to the Korea Food and Drug Administration on the 15th, the agency will conduct an on-site investigation at Maeil Dairies' factory that produced the problematic milk products through the local government authorities. An FDA official stated, "Gwangju City plans to visit Maeil Dairies' Gwangju plant tomorrow to collect and inspect products." Gwangju City had already inspected the production facilities and processes on the 13th. During this investigation, not only the problematic products but all products produced at this factory will be collected and tested. Consumer anxiety regarding Maeil Dairies' products is spreading. On online parenting cafes, there are posts asking, "Is it safe to continue giving milk and soy milk products produced at the same factory to children?"

 

Maeil Dairies announced on the 14th that it is voluntarily recalling the product "Maeil Milk Original Sterilized 200ml (with a best before date of February 16th next year)." They stated, "We confirmed that the product was suitable for safety standards and released it, but some products were found to have quality issues." They further explained, "To determine the exact cause, we conducted a thorough inspection of equipment and processes, and during equipment cleaning, it was confirmed that a small amount of cleaning water was mixed into some products due to a worker’s mistake." Maeil Dairies added, "To prevent recurrence, we strengthened monitoring during production and took immediate action. We also checked the quality of products produced on the same line afterward, and no issues were found." The company reported to food authorities that during cleaning, water was sprayed from the production equipment for about one second. It is believed that up to 50 products may have been contaminated with cleaning water.

 

This incident was first reported on the 12th when employees who received the daily milk original sterilized 200ml product as company cafeteria food at Hyundai Motor Research Institute complained of strange odors and discoloration. An anonymous workplace community, Blind, posted a photo of the Daily Milk product with orange liquid leaking out, along with a message stating that after unknowingly drinking the product, they experienced vomiting and abdominal pain. According to the Korea Food & Drug Administration, two Hyundai Motor employees who drank the product complained of vomiting and stomach discomfort and received medical treatment. After treatment, they have been discharged from the hospital.

 

An official from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated, "Sodium hydroxide, a component of the cleaning water, is alkaline, and when mixed in very small amounts, it can turn the milk's color to orange, and if the concentration of the mixed cleaning water becomes stronger, it can turn gray or black," adding, "Claims circulating online that the original cleaning water was contained in milk cartons or that someone who ingested it vomited blood are not true."
