Snowstorm in Seoul for the first time in 58 years, surfing in Busan?... Looking at NASA satellite images

How was your day today?

It is said that 19.3 centimeters of snow fell in Seoul over the course of a day on the 27th.

It is said that the record of November 20, 1966 (9.5 cm) was broken after 58 years.

Today on my way to work, it was all about Frozen, but the commute was like a battlefield...

My friend living in Gyeongsan said it's not raining, not snowing, and it's clear.

Unlike Seoul, where a lot of snow fell yesterday and today...

On the 27th, at Songjeong Beach in Haeundae-gu, Busan, photos capturing surfers enjoying the waves were also taken.

We were in the same Korea on the same day, but lived through different weather conditions~

I'm worried and exhausted because it's snowing so heavily~

I hope it arrives at a reasonable time~

On the 27th, when a heavy snow warning was issued across various parts of the country, surfers riding the waves at Songjeong Beach in Haeundae-gu, Busan, were captured by media cameras. On the 28th, satellite images also confirmed that only the Gyeongnam region did not receive snowfall.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, on the 27th in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, 41.2 cm of snow fell, the most snowfall recorded since 1964. Seoul also broke its record for the deepest new snow accumulation in a single day in November. On the 27th, Seoul received 19.3 cm of snow in one day, surpassing the previous record of 9.5 cm set on November 20, 1966, after 58 years. In Incheon, 19.4 cm of snow fell in one day, setting a new record for the maximum snowfall in November. The previous record was 8.0 cm on November 23, 1972.

Meanwhile, as of 2 a.m. on the 28th, the snowfall amount in the Gyeongnam region, including Busan, Gimhae, and Changwon, was '0'.

The reason why it rarely snows in the Busan area is due to the terrain. The Korean Peninsula has a topography where the east is high and the west is low, known as Donggo Seojeo. The Sobaek Mountain Range, located diagonally across the Korean Peninsula, acts as a barrier to snow in Busan. Cold air passes over the warm West Sea, forming snow clouds, which then pour a lot of snow over Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces. However, these clouds disperse and disappear after crossing the Sobaek Mountain Range, preventing snow clouds from reaching Busan.

In addition, the cold wind blowing from Primorsky in Russia brings a lot of snow to the Gangwon region, but it does not reach Busan because of the barrier of the Gaema Plateau. Also, since Busan in the south generally has higher temperatures, even when snow falls in the colder northern regions, it sometimes turns into rain in relatively milder Busan.
