The post office has started separate disposal to recycle indiscriminately discarded coffee capsules.
The Korea Post, under the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced that it will simultaneously implement a nationwide coffee capsule collection project through the postal network starting from the 18th. To this end, the Korea Post signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Environment and Dongseo Food in July.
The coffee capsules collected by the post office are limited to Dongseo Food products. Users separate the coffee grounds (residue) from the capsules using an opener (capsule recycler) after use. Then, only the aluminum capsules are placed in the dedicated postal collection bag, which can be deposited in any mailbox nationwide. The aluminum capsules deposited in the mailbox are collected by mail carriers and delivered to recycling companies.
The opener that separates the mail-only collection envelope and the coffee box is produced by Dongseo Food and distributed through the national post office headquarters. It can also be requested on the Dongseo Food online sales site. The locations of postboxes nationwide can be checked via the QR code printed on the mail-only collection envelope, the Internet Post Office, or the Post Office app.
Joae Geun, head of the Korea Post, stated, "In addition to coffee capsules, we will establish a recycling and resource circulation system for various resources," and "The Korea Post plans to do its best to create sustainable environmental value."
