"Please do not touch even if you see it"… What is the identity of the 'square fish cake' requested by Seoul City?
Seoul City announced that to prevent rabies transmitted through wild animals such as raccoons, it will distribute 37,000 rabies bait vaccines around major mountains and rivers from October 14 to October 28.
Rabies bait prevention medication is made by placing the vaccine inside fish cake dough to attract wild animals. When the animal eats it, the vaccine is absorbed through the gum mucosa, forming immunity.
Since 2006, the city has been distributing rabies bait vaccines for wild animals every spring and fall, and there have been no cases of rabies in wild animals in Seoul since the distribution.
The bait prevention medication will be sprayed along the Seoul border at intervals of 50 to 100 meters, with 15 to 20 points per section, covering a total of 157 km in the form of a barrier to prevent the virus from entering within Seoul.
The main dispersal sites include mountains inhabited by wildlife (such as Bukhansan, Dobongsan, Suraksan, Bureamsan, Gwanaksan, Yongmasan, Gwanaksan again, and Umyeonsan), rivers (such as Yangjaecheon, Tancheon, Anyangcheon, and Uicheon), and parks where raccoons frequently appear, leading to numerous complaints.
Seoul City has urged citizens not to touch wild animal rabies bait prevention medication distributed during hikes. If touched by humans, the scent may be transferred, causing wild animals to avoid eating it.
The bait prevention medication is approximately 2-3 cm in a 'square shape', and at the dispersal site, banners and warning notices will be posted to prevent citizens from touching the medication. Unused bait prevention medication will be collected starting about 30 days after dispersal.
The bait prevention medication used is a product proven to be safe for over 50 species of animals, including dogs and cats. Even if a pet ingests it, it is not dangerous. However, to achieve effective rabies prevention in pets such as dogs and cats, they must receive the 'Rabies Prevention Vaccine for Pets' at a veterinary hospital.
When hiking with pets, always keep them on a leash to prevent contact with wild animals, and if your pet comes into contact with a suspected rabies animal, report it to the quarantine authorities and seek treatment at a veterinary hospital. Additionally, if a person is bitten by a wild animal or a suspected rabies animal, they should wash the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and immediately visit a hospital.
Animals infected with rabies easily become agitated or hyperreactive, exhibit aggressive behavior, drool excessively, and in severe cases, lose consciousness and die.
Director Lee Su-yeon of the Seoul City Garden City Bureau said, "By distributing bait prevention medication, we aim to prevent rabies, a zoonotic disease, from the wild animal stage to protect the safety of citizens and pets." She also urged, "As outdoor activities increase in the fall, please avoid contact with wild animals during hiking or walking."
