When candy got stuck in my younger sibling's throat... The astonishing reaction of my 6-year-old sister
A 6-year-old older sister was quickly rescuing her younger sibling, who was choking on candy and struggling to breathe, using the Heimlich maneuver.
On the 28th (local time), according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong, a 3-year-old girl in a house in Hainan Province, southern China, was unable to breathe properly because a candy was stuck in her throat, and she asked her 6-year-old sister for help.
In the released video, the younger sibling burst into tears, hitting their chest and looking for their older sister as if feeling frustrated. The younger sibling pointed to their throat and assumed a choking posture. Seeing this, the older sister immediately got up from the sofa and performed the Heimlich maneuver on her sibling. The Heimlich maneuver is an emergency procedure used to remove an object blocking the airway.
The older sister stood behind her younger sibling and attempted chest compressions several times. She intermittently checked the neck and continued with the Heimlich maneuver. Eventually, the candy lodged in the younger sibling's throat was expelled from the mouth. The younger sibling appeared to cry and express the pain they had felt, and the older sister seemed to collapse as if her strength had drained from her legs. The younger sibling later regained stability and was reported to have no other issues.
According to local reports, the child recalled the first aid methods taught by their mother and saved their sibling in place of their mother, who was away doing laundry.
Netizens who watched the video responded with comments such as, "I couldn't even eat alone when I was young, but that's impressive," "Be nice to your sister when you grow up," and "Even I, as an adult, don't know how to perform the Heimlich maneuver properly."
When performing the Heimlich maneuver on an adult whose airway is blocked by foreign material, stand behind the patient, make a fist with one hand and place it around the middle of the patient's abdomen and sternum, then wrap the other hand around the fist. Place one leg between the patient's legs and extend the other leg backward to maintain balance. Apply strong force to press the patient's abdomen inward while pulling the patient upward from below. Continue repeating this motion while checking if the foreign material has been expelled.
