A case where a man in his 20s refused a police sobriety check and fled, hitting and ultimately killing a sanitation worker, has occurred, and footage capturing the scene has been released.

Cheonan Dongnam Police Station announced on the 7th that they are investigating a man in his 20s, A, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (refusal to undergo a breathalyzer test). A is suspected of refusing a breathalyzer test by the police around 12:53 a.m. on that day at Budul Yookgeori in Oryong-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, and fleeing more than 1 km, resulting in the death of sanitation worker B (36), who was working nearby.

Looking at the footage of the situation at the time, Mr. A did not move at all even after the traffic light at the intersection turned green. When someone in the passenger seat of the car behind got out and knocked on the front car window as if to check the situation, there was no response. The police arrived after witnesses reported the incident, but Mr. A still did not move.

Mr. A, who was doing so, suddenly started to run away when the police demanded a blood alcohol test.

Mr. A was heading in a direction where Mr. B was working behind a sanitation truck without knowing English. Mr. A was running at high speed and collided directly with Mr. B and the truck, stopping only then.

Mr. A hit Mr. B but paid no attention and got out of the driver's seat to run away down an alley. A colleague who saw this scene chased the driver at full speed, and shortly after, the police arrived and joined the chase. Subsequently, Mr. A was arrested by the police and exhibited behaviors such as spinning around and sitting on the ground even while his wrists were restrained.

Person B was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest by the dispatched emergency medical team but died.

Mr. B, who joined the company last February and quietly carried out his duties, was reportedly about to get married. Mr. B's colleague told YTN, "He was very considerate and always led by example, and because he had good relationships with others, everyone is feeling sorry."

The police have detained the offending driver on charges of refusing a blood alcohol test and causing death by fleeing, and are investigating the details of the accident.
