"Six toenails fell off"… Still stubbornly doing "this exercise" for five years, the singer's reason?

"발톱 6개 빠졌다"… 그래도 5년째 ‘이 운동’ 고집하는 가수, 이유는?

Group g.o.d member Sean (51) confessed that he lost several toenails while running.

On today's CBS Radio 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' Shawn appeared and announced that he would be challenging an 81.5 km run to commemorate Liberation Day on August 15th. Shawn said, "A month ago, due to intense training, three toenails on my left foot and two on my right foot fell out. My right big toe is also about to fall off, so about six toenails have come off," and added, "People around me tell me to stop and just run 8.15 km, but I think those who dedicated themselves to Korea's independence would say 'that's enough.' I want to express my gratitude." Shawn first attempted the 81.5 km run in 2020 and is now taking on his fifth '815 Run' this year.

If you walk or run frequently like Shawn, there is a risk of developing 'jogging toenail'.

Jogging toenails occur when repeated pressure is applied to specific areas of the toenail, leading to subungual bleeding, discoloration of the toenail, and nail detachment. Damage to the surrounding areas that form the toenail causes gaps to form between the layers that make up the nail, weakening it. At this time, the nail may peel off, and bleeding and discoloration occur due to damage to the skin beneath the nail. Additionally, horizontal wrinkles or bruising may also appear on the toenail.

Jogging toenails will naturally heal. If there is acute pain or bleeding, cold compresses can help. However, prolonged cold compresses should be avoided as they can lead to frostbite and worsen symptoms. If a jogging toenail occurs, refraining from exercise until the symptoms subside is also a recommended approach.

To prevent nail damage caused by jogging or running, you should straighten your neck and waist when walking.

If you have a turtle neck or a bent back, causing your body's center of gravity to shift forward, you are more likely to develop ingrown toenails due to putting pressure on your toes during jogging. Wearing shoes that fit your foot size is also important. Walking or running for a long time in shoes that do not fit properly can put pressure on your feet. Not trimming the edges of the toenails closely can also help. When the edges of the toenails are short, they press against the skin while walking, causing them to dig in.
